Young Sheldon's Legacy Casts A Shadow On Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage Season 3 | Review

CBS's prequel resurrects old Young Sheldon tropes, but despite the stakes being higher, Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage season 3 make light of them.

Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage returns for season 3 and Young Sheldon's legacy is finally catching up to it. Seven years after The Big Bang Theory wrapped on CBS, its universe continues on the network via its ongoing prequel. Admittedly, Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage is tied more to Young Sheldon than the flagship, but it keeps the nerd-centric sitcom's relevancy quite successfully. That said, while it isn't as limited by the canon set by Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady's original series, it's imperative for Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage to be a worthy follow-up to Young Sheldon.

Born out of Young Sheldon's ending, Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage tackles Cece's parents' life as they navigate their relationship while raising her. While much of the shows focus is on the pair, the new series is also tasked with continuing lingering storylines left by its parent series, including updating how things are for the remaining Texas-based Cooper family members. This means that Mary, Missy, and Meemaw find themselves regularly included in its storytelling.

Impressively, the first two seasons of Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage has done a great job laying out its future while also honoring its past. That said, the latest turn of events in the season 3 premiere, "Feminine Wiles and Some Tire Thing in Lubbock," marks the first time that the new show is failing at preserving the legacy of Young Sheldon.

Mary & Georgie's Rift Is Watered Down Despite Its Seriousness

Fagenbacher and Mary in Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage CBS

The core story of Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage season 3, episode 1 revolves around the conflict between Georgie and Mary regarding Fred Fagenbacher. CBS built the narrative up towards the end of season 2, with the finale seeing the mother and son's confrontation about Zoe Perry's character's decision to go out with her firstborn's business rival. Since Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage is technically a comedy, it is played for laughs despite the seriousness of their debate.

Fagenbacher's rivalry got nasty in Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage season 2, to the point that he tried sabotaging Georgie's attempt to honor George's memory during his death anniversary. Between that and every other time that he attempted to jeopardize McAllister Auto, the fact that Mary insists on dating him is a frustrating move — much more so when the rest of Mandy's family sides with her. The narrative itself isn't the main issue here, however. Arguably, it's a great way to explore Georgie and Mary's collective and individual grief journey on the heels of George's death. The problem is that the seriousness of the issue is watered down by Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage's execution.

Georgie and Mary's rift goes beyond the events of Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage and additional context from Young Sheldon gives the issue a heavier emotional weight.

Georgie and Mary's rift goes beyond the events of Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage and additional context from Young Sheldon gives the issue a heavier emotional weight. For the longest time, Georgie (and Missy) struggled with their relationship with Mary simply because she was mostly focused on Sheldon. It did seem like she was finally coming around to side with her firstborn, but this pulls that development back. The sudden, unfortunately, doesn't accurately capture the seriousness of the matter.

Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage Is Haunted By Young Sheldon's Legacy

Beyond the Cooper family drama, Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage season 3, episode 1 does great in developing its new main characters. Connor's adventure and eventual stint in jail not only helps in his character development but also his bond with Georgie, who bails him out. Ruben and Abuela, despite their limited screetime, are always great. Finally, the fact that Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage is finally putting some focus on Cece is a step in the right direction. All of these minor plots and moments in "Feminine Wiles and Some Tire Thing in Lubbock" highlight that when crafting its own lore, the project shines.

That said, as with its predecessor, Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage doesn't exist in a bubble. It will always be compared and related to Young Sheldon, even as it is able to establish its own identity simply because it's standing on its shoulders. The CBS family drama nearly perfected the genre towards the end of its run, but it is able to do that partly because of its single-camera format. Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage films in front of a live audience, so quieter moments are trickier to pull off. That said, it should not be at the expense of watering down the emotional weight that its parent series has established. It was able to hit the delicate balance in season 1, on the heels of George's death. Hopefully, it's able to find that again.

Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage season 3 airs every Thursday, 8 PM ET on CBS.
