The Brooch Is Officially the Red Carpet Accessory of 2026

All year, we've been seeing brooches take over the red carpet. The 78th Primetime Emmys red carpet only proved our style trend theory. Stars like Coleman Domingo, Emma D’Arcy, Noah Kahan, Louisa Jacobson, and more were spotted wearing a brooch detail on their suited look for the night. 

Even before the latest red carpet, brooches were all the rage earlier in the year during the Oscars and the Met Gala. We saw celebrities like Hudson Williams, Connor Storrie, Rosé, Leonardo DiCaprio, Kieran Culkin, Joe Alwyn, and more. 

When it comes to styling, brooches are versatile and unisex. They can be feminine if paired with a dress, skirt, or heels. But most commonly on the red carpet,  they're used to add an interesting jeweled detail to masculine silhouettes. To an otherwise monochrome suit, the brooch catches the eye without being overwhelming.

What is a Brooch?

A brooch is a decorative item, usually made of metal with gemstones, that's meant to be fastened onto tops, jackets, blazers, pants, and more. Other than adding a touch of sophistication or a pop of color to traditionally tailored outfits, brooches also serve as a practical styling tool to tie fabric together. 

Brooches date back as far as the Bronze Age. In ancient Europe, they still served as clothing fasteners and decoration, as well as indicators of social status and class. Of course, these brooches were simple and made of metal. The earliest era of modern jewelry was the Renaissance, when brooches became elaborate and opulent with diamonds, rubies, and emeralds. 

How To Wear & Style a Brooch?

Brooches are an extremely versatile piece of jewelry that can be worn and used in a variety of ways. The most practical way to style them is to use them to fasten clothes. Have a loose-fitting waist? Cinch it with a brooch. Want a different neckline? Make it a one-shoulder moment with a brooch. Want to add a different texture or color to your outfit? Fasten a silk scarf to your top or bottom with a brooch. 

The other way to style a brooch is to use it as jewelry. This is the way most celebrities (mostly men) wear brooches on the red carpet. Their stylists add a beautiful brooch to their suit jacket or blazer to make their outfit stand out. This transforms an ordinary monochrome suit into an interesting outfit without being too loud or elaborate. It's just a touch of silver or gold on the breast. And really, that's all you need.
