Indonesia bars Chinese national suspected of Starlux theft

Tangerang, Banten (ANTARA) - Indonesia's immigration authority at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport has denied entry to a Chinese national, initialed HW, suspected of stealing passengers' belongings on a Starlux flight.

Head of the airport's immigration office, Galih P. Kartika Perdhana, said the decision followed a request from Taiwan's Taipei Economic and Trade Office (TETO) over an alleged theft aboard Starlux flight JX761 from Taipei to Jakarta on Saturday.

“Only foreign nationals who provide benefit to Indonesia and whose presence does not threaten security or public order are allowed to enter. Every foreign national must undergo a thorough immigration examination,” Galih said in Tangerang, Banten Province, on Sunday.

He said Starlux flight JX761 carrying HW landed at Terminal 3 of Soekarno-Hatta International Airport at around 11:20 a.m. local time on Saturday.

Upon arrival at the terminal, immigration officers immediately conducted an immigration examination and processed the passenger's immigration documents.

“During the process, officers coordinated closely with TETO, Taiwan's police attaché in Indonesia, and Starlux,” he said.

HW held a Multiple-Entry Visit Visa that remained valid until April 27, 2027.

However, the valid visa did not prevent immigration authorities from denying HW entry following an official alert and coordination with Taiwan's authorities.

“In this case, we received an official alert from Taiwanese authorities. After conducting checks and coordinating with the relevant parties, he was denied entry in accordance with applicable regulations,” Galih said.

The Soekarno-Hatta immigration office said the decision was based on Article 92(h) and Article 93 of Regulation of the Minister of Law and Human Rights No. 9 of 2024 on Immigration Examination Procedures for People Entering or Leaving Indonesian Territory.

As part of the procedure, officers also stamped HW's passport with a refusal of entry stamp.

After the process was completed, HW was returned to Taipei, his original point of departure, on the first available Starlux flight, JX762, from Jakarta to Taipei.

The Soekarno-Hatta immigration office reaffirmed its commitment to interagency coordination to strengthen immigration supervision and law enforcement at Indonesia's main gateway, Galih said.
