Mount Anak Krakatau activity level lowered to Level II

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Geological Agency of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) lowered the activity level of Mount Anak Krakatau in the Sunda Strait from Level III (Alert) to Level II (Warning) on Monday evening (Sept 21).

The Head of the Geological Agency, Lana Saria, explained the status downgrade was based on a comprehensive analysis and evaluation of declining volcanic activity and deformation data indicating deflation.

Previously, the activity level of this Type-A active volcano had been raised to Level III (Alert) on July 2, 2026, due to increased seismicity and deformation. During that period, Mount Anak Krakatau recorded 224 eruptions through September 3, 2026.

The volcano then experienced continuous eruptions for 25 hours between September 4 and 6, 2026, producing lava flows toward the northwest, west, and southwest of the eruption center.

Following the event and seven Strombolian eruptions, volcanic activity showed a declining trend through September 20, 2026.

Along with this reduction in activity, the Geological Agency issued a safety recommendation prohibiting the public, tourists, and hikers from approaching or engaging in activities within a two-kilometer radius of the crater's activity center.

The agency warned of potential hazards, such as incandescent rock ejections and heavy ashfall.

Additionally, residents in coastal areas of Banten and Lampung provinces are urged to remain calm and not be misled by rumors linking the eruption to a potential tsunami.

The public is advised to continue their daily activities as usual while following instructions from the local Regional Agency for Disaster Countermeasures (BPBD).

Earlier, the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) also confirmed there were no wave anomalies indicating a tsunami in the Sunda Strait following increased volcanic activity at Mount Anak Krakatau.
