Kuala Lumpur (ANTARA) - The establishment of the Malaysia-Indonesia Halal Council marks a step toward creating an ASEAN and eventually a global halal council, Head of Indonesia’s Halal Product Assurance Organizing Agency (BPJPH) Ahmad Haikal Hasan said.

“The establishment of the Malaysia-Indonesia Halal Council, which paves the way for an ASEAN Halal Council, also creates new opportunities in the global market,” Hasan told ANTARA when contacted from Kuala Lumpur on Saturday.

Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi announced the establishment of the joint halal council on Friday, saying it aims to strengthen halal diplomacy between Malaysia and Indonesia.

The council will be chaired by BPJPH, with Malaysia serving as its secretary-general. Its inaugural meeting is scheduled for October 2026.

Hasan underscored that halal is not about competition or restrictions, but rather about ensuring comfort, peace of mind, and security.

He said that, in line with the mandate of Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and the state, the primary objective of halal certification is to protect the nation.

“Halal is not just for Muslims. It is a modern trend, a lifestyle, a sign of modern civilization, and prosperity of life. Halal stands for transparency, accountability, clear traceability, and high quality, and it is meant for everyone,” he said.

He added that in today’s open global market, businesses from non-Muslim-majority countries such as China and South Korea are seeking to have their products certified halal.

“Therefore, we have to take part in today’s global arena. Otherwise, we’ll definitely be left behind,” he stressed.

Hasan said Malaysia, as a partner of Indonesia with decades of experience in halal practices, is an ideal collaborator for exchanging knowledge and expertise.

He added that an ASEAN Halal Council bringing together all 11 ASEAN member states would create a strong force by tapping into the region’s vast market. ASEAN currently has 11 member states following Timor-Leste’s admission in October 2025.

“Halal is about unity, togetherness, and protection, driving us toward greater success. This is where our dream comes alive, to realize our target to make Indonesia the world’s halal hub,” he said.
