The online subscription game has changed significantly since the days of Xbox Live Gold. While Xbox was the only publisher with an online subscription service at one point, Sony and Nintendo slowly but surely adopted their own forms of online play through PlayStation Plus and Nintendo Switch Online.
To go even further, all of these services have adopted multiple "tiers," with three versions of PlayStation Plus and two distinct tiers of Switch Online. Typically, these include even more games to play, plus a few other ancillary benefits.
The eShop is planning pretty big things, however. Nintendo just let us know that a major update is on the way, and one region in particular is going to benefit heavily.
This week, Nintendo announced it will support Switch Online and Switch eShop services in the Philippines starting November 10. This is a monumental moment for anyone living in the Philippines, as all aspects of the Switch eShop and Switch Online experience are set to go live on that date, including cloud saves.
Here are the full details from Nintendo:
Nintendo will be announcing that Nintendo eShop and Nintendo Switch Online services are scheduled to begin in the Philippines for Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch on November 10. With Nintendo eShop, users can purchase and download games, download downloadable contents, and Nintendo Switch Online membership. Nintendo Switch Online memberships offer a variety of services to subscribers.
You can enjoy online battles and cooperative play, as well as access a wide selection of titles from past Nintendo consoles and exclusive games available only to Nintendo Switch Online subscribers. Additionally, features like Save Data Cloud make playing on Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 even more fun and convenient.
For reference, some Switch fans in the Philippines have been using third-party sellers for eShop balances, or region-hopping on the eShop directly. Since credit cards are accepted in most regional eShops, and it's easy to create an account, it's clear how folks were getting by before this official change.
This aligns perfectly with the release of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake on the Switch 2, which debuts on November 5. Just five days later, players in the Philippines will be able to pick the game up, as well as any other releases going forward.
It's going to be a nice few months for gaming in general, with Grand Theft Auto 6 launching just a few weeks later, going into a very busy holiday season filled with open-world games and action-adventure romps. We could see record game sale numbers at some point, especially with early reports that Ocarina of Time is selling out physically at some vendors.
Leave it to one of the most iconic franchises of all time to make waves like that, amid what could be the biggest game of all time: GTA 6. If you're a Switch fan, opening the eShop to more regions can only be good for everyone.
