MobLand's Tom Hardy breaks down Harry's reaction to Jan's bombshell news in season 2

MobLand actor Tom Hardy has opened up about the bombshell news that his character Harry Da Souza received from wife Jan in the first episode of season two.

The normally cool and collected fixer was rocked when his wife Jan told him that she wants a divorce, and in an exclusive chat with Digital Spy, we asked Hardy about Harry's "rainbow of emotions" in this new season.

"His rainbow of emotions. It's funny, you'd be hard pressed to see a rainbow of emotions in Harry," Hardy said. "I don't like to play those kind of colours in that aspect because Harry's kind of an exercise in containment in many aspects and apprehension for an audience member to wonder what is coming next.

"So in portrayal, it's kind of key not to give anything away, if that makes sense, because then it's unpredictable."

He continued: "I think it's almost like the glitch of a computer virus for Harry. It's running the process of what are the odds in a person that cannot lose. In a game that's not a competition, it's life or death.

"So the gamut of rainbow of emotions aren't equatable for me in emotion, in that aspect, because I don't think Harry has capacity to – I think [he] gets big feelings, but those have to be contained to then run the programme."

Co-star Joanne Froggatt explained the show was commissioned and turned around so quickly that there was no read-through or rehearsal, so she didn't meet her on-screen husband Hardy until filming had begun.

She recalled: "I said to Tom, I was like, oh, 'I wonder what it is about Jan and the relationship right now that is making her feel unfulfilled? Is it because Gina is about to flee the nest?'

"And Tom was brilliant. [He] just sat down with me and told me all about the things that he thought about Harry and how he wanted to play him. And he just said, at the end of that, [that] Harry's a really powerful man, [and] the woman he's with would be equally as powerful, if not more powerful than him. And I was like, 'amazing'."
