Eastern Cape shopping mall gets a R76 million upgrade – Here’s what’s new

Translate

A major shopping mall in Komani (formerly Queenstown), Eastern Cape, has unveiled a R76.1 million extension and refurbishment, adding new shops, banking services and retail options for shoppers.

Nonesi Mall, owned by Vukile Property Fund, officially opened its upgraded space on 13 August 2026, following the completion of the project.

The fully pre-let expansion adds 3 100 square metres of retail space, taking the mall’s total gross lettable area to almost 31 000 square metres.

The investment is expected to further strengthen Nonesi Mall’s position as one of Komani’s leading shopping and services destinations.

Four new major tenants for Nonesi Mall

The extension has brought four new anchor tenants to the mall:

  • OBC Better Butchery
  • Dis-Chem Pharmacy
  • Standard Bank
  • Absa Bank

They join an established tenant base that includes major retailers such as Game, Checkers, Boxer Superstores, Woolworths and Jet.

The redevelopment has also allowed for the relocation and refurbishment of the existing Clicks store and pharmacy, as well as the arrival of Edgars and an expansion of Sidestep.

The new tenants are expected to give shoppers greater access to everyday retail, pharmacy and financial services without having to travel elsewhere.

Hundreds of jobs created

The redevelopment has also provided an economic boost to the surrounding area.

According to Vukile, the project created 356 employment opportunities, with 174 of those jobs going to local people.

The company also spent approximately R39.7 million on subcontractors and materials during the project.

Of this amount, around R12.5 million was spent within the local community, while another R26.6 million was spent elsewhere in the Eastern Cape. This means approximately 98.5% of the project expenditure remained within the province.

The mall is also one of Vukile’s largest and best-performing South African properties.
