Two killed in Proton X70 crash while fleeing police checkpoint in Gua Musang

GUA MUSANG, Aug 28 — Two men were killed in a road crash after the SUV they were travelling in veered into the opposite lane, collided with another vehicle and then crashed into a lamp post on Jalan Gua Musang-Kuala Lipis in Bukit Lanjut yesterday.

Gua Musang district police chief Supt Sik Choon Foo said police received a report about the crash at 10.24 am.

He said initial investigations found that police officers were conducting snap checks at Kilometre 16 of Jalan Gua Musang-Kuala Lipis when they spotted a suspicious-looking Proton X70, which then turned back towards Gua Musang town.

"Police officers then followed the vehicle to carry out an inspection. Upon reaching the scene, the Proton X70 is believed to have lost control, crossed into the opposite lane and collided with the rear side of a Toyota Hilux before veering off the road and crashing into a lamp post,” he said in a statement yesterday.

Sik said one man died at the scene, while another died while receiving treatment at Gua Musang Hospital. Their bodies were then taken to the hospital’s forensic unit for post-mortem examinations.

He said several other occupants of the Proton X70 were injured and taken to the same hospital for treatment, adding that the police officers and the Toyota Hilux driver were not injured.

"Further investigations are under way to identify all those involved and establish the full circumstances of the incident,” he said, adding that the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving. — Bernama
