Ikogosi Road Race returns Oct 31

Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanj

The 2026 Ikogosi Road Race will hold on October 31, with Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to youth empowerment, grassroots development and initiatives capable of stimulating the local economy.

The governor’s endorsement of the 17.5-kilometre race underlines his continued support for youth-driven programmes that create opportunities for young people while opening new avenues for small and medium-scale businesses across the state.

Organisers are building on the success of last year’s edition, which received international commendation for its organisation, athlete welfare and prompt payment of prize money, and are working to make this year’s race bigger and fully aligned with international standards. They have also been commended for their consistency and determination in sustaining the race and progressively raising its standards over the years.

The route, from the scenic terrain of Ilawe to the world-famous Ikogosi Warm Spring, is expected to showcase Ekiti’s natural attractions, culture and infrastructure, while positioning the state as an emerging destination for sports tourism, adventure and investment. Hotels, restaurants, transport operators, traders and artisans are among those expected to benefit from the influx of athletes, officials and spectators, while young people stand to gain opportunities in event management, hospitality, logistics, media, security and other sports-related services.

The race will also serve as a platform for youth engagement and talent discovery, particularly for athletes from Ekiti State. Beyond the overall prize, Ekiti indigenes will enjoy a special incentive, with a reward set aside for the first Ekiti athlete to finish, provided the athlete places among the top 10 — a motivation organisers hope will encourage local athletes to compete at the highest level while gaining valuable exposure to advance their sporting careers.

With the October 31 date now confirmed, expectations are high that the 2026 edition will set a new benchmark while delivering lasting economic and social benefits to the people of Ekiti.

Registration is open on the official website, www.ikogosimarathon.com, where interested athletes can sign up for free.
