V for Vendetta Returns to Theaters for 20th Anniversary

20 years have gone by since the world was told, “Remember, remember, the 5th of November.” Since then, the movie from which the quote originates, V for Vendetta, has only grown more relevant. Adapted from the DC Vertigo graphic novel by Alan Moore and David Lloyd, V for Vendetta is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year with a theatrical re–release set, naturally, for the first week of November.

Released in 2006, V for Vendetta became an instant classic, with its story of freedom and rebellion. Set in a dystopian future version of the United Kingdom that has been taken over by a fascist totalitarian regime, a hero known only as V (Hugo Weaving), dons a Guy Fawkes mask to inspire his fellow citizens and call for action. A young woman named Evey Hammond (Natalie Portman), finds herself caught up in V’s plans and becomes an unlikely hero herself.

Directed by James McTeigue, in his directorial debut, and written by Lana and Lilly Wachowski, V for Vendetta remains successful because of its grounded nature and authenticity. The film manages to tell a story with universal themes of good and evil alongside impressive visuals and special effects. The politics have also become even more relevant over the years, leading to the film’s long lasting popularity.
