Mike Tomlin spent nearly two decades preparing the Pittsburgh Steelers for Sundays. Now, he gets to spend them talking football without carrying the weight of every result. His first season as an NBC analyst has gone well, and his reputation has made him a leading name ahead of the NFL's next coaching cycle. Yet a return to the sidelines in 2027 may depend on something a big contract cannot fix. According to Front Office Sports, Tomlin is enjoying his new career enough that another head coaching job is far from a certainty.
Mike Tomlin's 2027 NFL return is not guaranteed
Teams searching for a head coach could face a familiar choice: pursue a proven winner or look elsewhere. Tomlin would be a leading candidate if he decided to return, with his record at Pittsburgh giving him a strong case for another opportunity.
“The financial terms of his contract with NBC are not publicly known. But it's believed that the deal is lucrative by industry standards and that, while Tomlin is barred from moving to another network as a broadcaster for the duration of his NBC contract, he is permitted to return to coaching if he opts to do so.” Mark Maske of Front Office Sports wrote.
One NFL agent offered a simple explanation for the uncertainty. “Tomlin is enjoying TV for now,” the agent told Front Office Sports. “But let's see if they throw him a bag.”
Money may not be enough to change his mind. Another source told the publication that financial offers were not the main issue, pointing instead to whether Tomlin enjoyed broadcasting and felt good at the job.
The Steelers contract could complicate Tomlin's return
There is another hurdle for Tomlin's personal choice. Pittsburgh announced a three-year contract extension in June 2024 that covered the 2025 and 2026 seasons, with a team option reportedly attached for 2027. The Steelers have not clarified whether that option was exercised.
If Pittsburgh holds his contractual rights, a team pursuing Tomlin could need to negotiate compensation. Denver faced a similar situation when it hired Sean Payton from New Orleans in 2023, sending the Saints first- and second-round draft picks while receiving a third-round selection.
The New York Jets and Washington Commanders have emerged as possible destinations if they make coaching changes. Both franchises could offer Tomlin a chance to rebuild a struggling team, but that challenge would come with the demands he has stepped away from.
