Police personnel in Maguindanao del Norte shot dead


COTABATO CITY – A non-uniformed personnel of Police Regional Office-Bangsamoro Autonomous Region (PRO-BAR) was killed in the latest gun attack in Maguindanao del Norte on Saturday morning, Aug. 22, police said.
Capt. Steffi Salanguit, PRO-BAR spokesperson, identified the victim as Jonathan A. Juan, who was assigned at the Sultan Kudarat municipal police station, and a resident of Pigcawayan, Cotabato.

Salanguit said Juan was driving his motorbike on his way to his place of assignment when two men riding tandem on a motorbike shot him from behind while along the national highway in Barangay Dalumangcob, Sultan Kudarat, Maguindanao del Norte at 8:10 a.m.

Police are still determining the motive of the attack, the second in Maguindanao del Norte in the past 48 hours.
On Friday morning, unidentified gunmen shot two women in Barangay Semba, Datu Odin Sinsuat, Maguindanao del Norte.
Killed in the attack was a 68-year-old Tarhata Samad, a widow from Barangay Tamontaka, while Suraya Ali, 47, was injured.
They were sitting in front of a roadside carinderia when attacked by the suspect on board a motorbike. The motive of the attack remained unknown.

These two separate attacks occurred while an election gun ban is in effect for next month’s Bangsamoro parliamentary elections.
Brig. Gen. Christopher Abecia, PRO-BAR regional director, has strongly condemned the attack against the PRO-BAR personnel and all other victims of gun attacks in the region.

Abecia described Juan as an integral part of the police, contributing to the delivery of police service to the Bangsamoro community.
“Such deliberate violence against a member of the PNP is unacceptable and will not be tolerated,” Abecia said in a statement.

“We call on anyone with information regarding the incident to coordinate with the nearest police station,” Abecia said, adding that PRO BAR remains committed to upholding the rule of law, protecting its personnel and the public, and ensuring that those responsible are held accountable. /jpv
