Fisheries Ministry concerned over missing fishing canoe and seven crew members

Translate

The Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture has expressed concern over the disappearance of a fishing canoe, ‘Second Chance’, and its seven crew members, who have been missing since departing Sekondi Fishing Harbour on October 9, 2026.

In a press statement, the ministry said the canoe had reportedly left the harbour for a fishing expedition offshore Axim and had not returned.

It said it was working closely with the Fisheries Commission, the Ghana Navy, the Ghana Maritime Authority, the Marine Police and coastal fishing communities to support ongoing search and rescue efforts.

The ministry urged fishing vessels and coastal communities, particularly those along the eastern coastline, to remain vigilant and promptly report any information that could assist in locating the missing canoe and its crew.

It expressed solidarity with the families of the missing fishers during the difficult period, saying every effort must be made to locate the seven crew members and bring them home safely.

The ministry reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening safety at sea, emergency communication and coordinated maritime search and rescue systems to better protect Ghana’s fishers.
