How Sophia Bush Learned of Chad Michael Murray's Alleged Cheating

Why Sophia Bush is Done Trying to Prove She and Ashlyn Harris Didn’t Have an Affair

Sophia Bush is sharing insight into a difficult chapter.

Nearly two decades after the One Tree Hill alum finalized her divorce from costar Chad Michael Murray, she alleged in her new memoir And I Will Tell You Mine that learning of his infidelity from one of his close friends is what ultimately led to their split.

“It had always bothered me that one of [Murray’s] best friends had fallen mysteriously ill the night before the [wedding] day and not shown up to stand up there as a groomsman,” Bush wrote in the book, out now. “Thinking about it that summer gave me the chills. I needed to know why.”

And when Bush called the no-show in the months following her and Murray’s 2005 nuptials, when the John Tucker Must Die star was filming movies back-to-back, she says that the A Cinderella Story star’s pal sighed and asked why she hadn’t called earlier.

“And then he told me. Everything he could about all the girls he knew of,” Bush wrote. “Girls I knew and plenty of girls I didn’t. The number and the details are not important now. But at the time, they were shocking. Unimaginable, really. And brutal.”

“Including the fact that another woman was living in my spouse’s house in L.A. when I had met him in North Carolina,” she wrote. “Not a bats--t-crazy ex who’d shown up unannounced at all. Another partner. So much for the cute single guy at work.”

Bush, 44, and Murray, 45, met on the set of One Tree Hill in 2003, getting engaged in May 2004 during a trip to Australia. They went on to tie the knot in an intimate ceremony in Santa Monica, California, in April the following year when Bush was 21 and Murray was 23.

But, just five months later, in September 2005, the pair separated. After Bush unsuccessfully sought to annul their marriage citing fraud, the pair finalized their divorce in December 2006.

Even after their tumultuous breakup, they continued working together on OTH until he left in in 2009, three years before the she wrapped.

“Looking back now, I see the heat map of red flags,” she wrote. “I didn’t then. Love exists in real time, and in its absence, all the things that it blurs become clearer. Hindsight is a mother--ker.”

Bush—who went on to marry now-ex Grant Hughes and quietly wed wife Ashlyn Harris in 2025—goes on to write that she sees it “in perfect focus now” as she reflects on Murray’s “boys’ nights” and other instances that made her feel “the most searing humiliation I’d ever felt.”

“I finally understood why, at our rehearsal dinner, his father asked my mother if the female costar from Australia had been invited to the wedding and laughed when I’d responded, ‘No, she’s nice, but they’re not that close,’” she wrote. “I realized in the moment why he chuckled and looked at the floor then.”

E! News has reached out to a rep for Murray for comment but has not yet heard back.

Previously, Murray—dad to three kids with wife Sarah Roemer—shared he looks back on his marriage to Bush with no ill will, though he admitted to having some growing up to do at the time.

"I was a baby. I didn't know up, down, left, right," he explained to The Cut in 2024. "You move out there and you go, ‘Well, what am I supposed to do now? Get married? That's exciting!'"
