One animated movie series is still relatively unknown to even many film fanatics, despite having thus far had a 12-movie-long run, and having grossed over $1 billion through its box office during that time. With the biggest film franchises in the world now being worth many billions, it's easier for even movie series that earn a considerable amount to slip through the cracks in terms of how well they're known to audiences the world over.

For example, Ne Zha 2 put itself and its film predecessor on the map in a major way via its $2.2 billion box office results in 2025, but the film was still less well known for many than Zootopia 2, despite Ne Zha 2 being the highest-grossing film of the year, and Zootopia 2's box office coming in at second behind it.

A number of factors can play into this, including the history behind a franchise, the fanbase it has, and where promotion and popularity for it is most localized, since movies more often than not rely on their domestic audience for a good portion of their box office success and overall acclaim - with one animated movie series that saw its twelfth movie release in 2026 being a good example of how even expansive film franchises can fall under the rug for even some film buffs.

Boonie Bears Has Been Running For 14 Years & 12 Movies Now

While the animated franchise initially began in 2012 as a television show - and has been running ever since - the popularity of Boonie Bears naturally led to it also getting its own movie series. The premise of the franchise certainly also helps it work in both formats, since the story of the titular bears - who attempt to protect their home from harm, have fun, and help those in need - is one that can easily be set up to facilitate a truly wide range of stories, and works for either episodic television, or longer movie stories.

The Boonie Bears film lineup began in 2014, and has seen a film release almost every year since then, with the exception of 2020, which is the only year since wherein a movie hasn't been released for the franchise.

The newest, 2026's Boonie Bears: The Hidden Protector, moved the film series' overall earnings into the $1.3 billion ballpark thanks to its own reported $68 million box office, with the cumulative results of the franchise showing it's one that has some considerable financial results behind it when looking at the long-term picture - which makes it even more interesting to note it's a franchise that even many movie buffs won't be aware of.

Why So Many Moviegoers Don't Know About The Animated Movie Series

Though the Boonie Bears show and movie series have been ongoing for many years now, the franchise is largely known best in China, due to it being produced by Chinese studio Fantawild Animation and circulating most within the country subsequently.

In the same vein, Boonie Bears' movies are generally not shown as much in theaters outside of China, as is evidenced by the box office results of each film - with, for example, 2026's Boonie Bears: The Hidden Protector's $68 million box office having been made domestically in China, as is the case with most of the film series' lineup.

Ultimately, the fact the Boonie Bears franchise is less well known in other parts of the world makes this a prime example of how expansive the world of movies can be, as the animated film series is not a strictly small one given it's $1 billion plus overall gross, which is no doubt set to grow further with the release of yet more movies in the years to come.
