Four passengers injured in Lagos crash, drivers handed to police

Translate

Four passengers sustained multiple fractures in a collision involving a Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) and a commercial bus at Otedola, inward Berger, Lagos State, on Monday morning.

According to a statement posted on Monday on X by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the crash occurred near Jubilee Gate during the morning rush hour.

Officials of the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) rescued the injured passengers and took them to the Lagos State Accident and Emergency Centre at the Toll Gate for treatment.

LASTMA operatives managed traffic at the scene while police officers from the Isheri division provided security during the rescue operation.

The agency stated that its operatives arrested both drivers and handed them over to the police for investigation and possible prosecution. The two vehicles, including a Toyota Highlander SUV, were also handed over to the relevant authorities.

The crash occurred along the Otedola Bridge axis of the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, where previous accidents have been recorded. A Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) analysis documented 39 crashes at Otedola Bridge between January 2018 and June 2020, compared with 196 around Kara Bridge and 21 around OPIC.

The Lagos Sector Commander, Kehinde Hamzat, had advised motorists to strictly observe speed limits, maintain lane discipline and exercise caution, particularly along the steep sections of Otedola Bridge, to prevent avoidable crashes.

The report identified speed violations as the leading contributory factor across the three locations, followed by brake failure and mechanical deficiencies. It did not establish the cause of Monday’s crash.

LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki commended the agency’s operatives, LASAMBUS personnel, the FRSC and the police for their response.

He urged motorists to obey traffic regulations, maintain safe speeds and remain attentive while driving.
