Born on April 21, 1915, in Chihuahua, Mexico. His father was of Irish-Mexican heritage, and his mother was Mexican.

His family later moved to Los Angeles, where Quinn grew up in difficulty. Before finding his way into acting, he explored art and architecture and briefly studied under the renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Quinn later turned toward acting and began appearing in films during the 1930s.
