Indonesia, Australia seek stronger cooperation on law, security

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia and Australia have moved to deepen bilateral cooperation through the 12th Indonesia-Australia Ministerial Council Meeting on Law and Security held in Jakarta on Thursday.
Indonesian Coordinating Minister for Political and Security Affairs Dudung Abdurrachman and Australian Minister for Home Affairs Tony Burke co-chaired the meeting, which produced a joint communique outlining a shared commitment to expanded collaboration.
The two countries expressed their commitment to strengthening their strategic partnership, enhancing maritime security, combating terrorism, tackling transnational crimes, strengthening border security, and boosting cybersecurity cooperation.
"This document serves as a foundation for both countries to follow up on the meeting's outcomes through more concrete cooperation, especially in the face of common legal and security challenges," Dudung remarked.
He stressed the importance of enhancing coordination and building capacity to address increasingly complex security challenges.
"Such challenges cannot be tackled by a single country; resolving them requires intensive communication, coordination, and cooperation," the minister added.
He expressed hope that the bilateral meeting would produce tangible outcomes beyond written agreements, emphasizing the need for concrete joint follow-up measures that contribute to national and regional security.
Meanwhile, Burke said the meeting covered organized crime, including the operation of scam centers.
He also said the two sides discussed cybersecurity, highlighting the importance of strengthening efforts in the sector.
The minister added that Indonesia and Australia had exchanged views on the need to leverage advanced technology and maximize their respective capabilities while continuing to deepen their partnership and friendship.
He expressed confidence that the ministerial meeting would deliver tangible benefits to public security in both countries.
Thursday's meeting will be followed by the 7th Sub-regional Meeting on Counter Terrorism and Transnational Security involving eight countries on Friday.
