Cyril Ramaphosa grants Madlanga Commission final deadline extension
President Cyril Ramaphosa has extended the deadline for the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry to submit its final report to 25 January 2027.
The Commission had previously been given until 16 November 2026 to complete its work and submit the report.
The Presidency announced the latest extension on Saturday, 19 September.
The additional time will allow the Commission to process further evidence, including testimony from experts who have made recommendations relevant to its terms of reference.
The Presidency described the latest extension as the final extension.
Madlanga Commission welcomes extension
The Madlanga Commission has welcomed the additional time, saying it will allow it to hear outstanding testimony and complete its final report.
Commission spokesperson Jeremy Michaels said the inquiry welcomed the extension to 25 January 2027.
“This extension to 25 January 2027 will allow the commission to hear outstanding testimony and write the final report,” Michaels said.
The Commission has been holding public hearings since 17 September 2025 and has heard evidence from more than 100 witnesses during its work.
Inquiry into criminality and political interference
The Commission was established following serious allegations made by KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi in July 2025 concerning alleged criminal infiltration, political interference and corruption within the criminal justice system.
President Ramaphosa established the judicial commission in July 2025, with retired Constitutional Court Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga as chairperson.
The inquiry’s work has included testimony relating to alleged criminal infiltration of law enforcement agencies, the Political Killings Task Team and other matters falling within its terms of reference.
The Commission recently resumed public hearings after a two-week break, with evidence focusing on the Johannesburg Metro Police Department and allegations of criminal networks and collusion involving officers.
The Commission will now have until 25 January 2027 to complete its outstanding work and submit its final report.
