One of the most enduring television detectives of all time, Angela Lansbury's Jessica Fletcher has become a defining figure of the mystery genre since Murder, She Wrote debuted back in the mid-80s. The mystery novelist-turned-amateur sleuth became a television icon over the course of the series' remarkable 12-season run, which stretched from 1984 to 1996.

Whether investigating suspicious deaths in the seemingly perilous town of Cabot Cove or unraveling crimes during her travels, Fletcher combined sharp observation, warmth, and an understated tenacity that helped distinguish her from the harder-edged detectives that dominated much of the genre.

That formula turned Murder, She Wrote into one of television's most popular mystery series, while Lansbury's performance made Fletcher inseparable from the franchise and the role itself. Decades after the original series ended, the character remains an enduring part of cozy mystery culture. Now, Jessica Fletcher is preparing to take on another case in Cabot Cove, with a brand-new Murder, She Wrote mystery officially arriving this December.

Jessica Fletcher will officially return to Cabot Cove this December in Murder, She Wrote: A Killing in Real Estate, the latest continuation of the beloved mystery franchise. Written by Terrie Farley Moran and credited, as tradition dictates, to Jessica Fletcher as co-author, the new novel once again finds Cabot Cove's most famous resident confronted with a suspicious death in her seemingly idyllic Maine hometown.

This time, the trouble begins with a conflict that threatens to divide Cabot Cove even before anyone dies. A prominent developer named Lionel Watts has arrived in town and is attempting to purchase multiple properties so he can assemble enough land for a luxury hotel. His plans spark a heated debate among the locals, with some welcoming the additional tourism and economic development while others fear losing the old-fashioned character that makes Cabot Cove special. Even Mara's Luncheonette becomes a battleground for the opposing sides.

Naturally, the disagreement soon takes a deadly turn. Watts is discovered dead in the woods, and although his death initially appears to have been caused by a heart attack, Jessica isn't convinced. With plenty of residents having reasons to resent the developer and his plans, Fletcher once again has a long list of potential suspects to work through as she attempts to determine whether someone quite literally "made a killing in real estate."

A Killing in Real Estate is part of a long-running series following Jessica Fletcher's literary adventures that have continued for decades. Penguin Random House officially lists it as Book 64 in the Murder, She Wrote series, which began with Gin & Daggers in 1989. Donald Bain originally shepherded the tie-in series for decades, with later authors continuing Jessica's adventures after his death. Moran took over as one of the primary writers beginning in 2021, helping keep Fletcher solving mysteries long after the television series itself concluded.

The series isn't slowing down, either, with book 65, Murder, She Wrote: Only Murders in the Castle, by Jessica Fletcher and Barbara Early, already scheduled for a May 2027 release, meaning another case will be close on this one's heels. That story will take Jessica to New York's Boldt Castle after one of her novels is adapted for television and an actor dies under suspicious circumstances.

A Killing in Real Estate arrives on December 8, 2026, and the 272-page mystery is currently available for preorder in hardcover for $30, alongside an ebook edition, on various outlets. The exciting new Fletcher case will give longtime Murder, She Wrote fans another chance to return to Cabot Cove with her for one last foray before 2026 comes to a close.
