Part of the fun of a new Godzilla movie is finding out what it takes to make the King of the Monsters look like he might actually lose. Sometimes that means bringing back a rival with decades of history. This time, Toho gave fans eight creatures they’d never seen fight and asked which one they wanted to throw at him.
The studio’s New Monster General Election started in September with eight original designs by Shirogumi, the visual effects studio behind Godzilla Minus One. Fans voted in two rounds, first cutting the field to four and then starting over to choose the winner. The prize was a spot opposite Godzilla in a future Fest Godzilla short, along with a merchandise rollout.
Toho announced at Godzilla Fest on November 3 that Xenolhu, an extradimensional creature officially described as a “Dimensional Entity,” will be Godzilla’s next challenger. Xenolhu won the final round with 16,850 votes, beating runner-up Sagius, a drone carrier machine that received 14,649. The winner will make its live-action debut in a new Fest Godzilla production planned for 2027 or later.

Where Will Godzilla Fight Xenolhu?
The fight is slated for Toho’s Fest Godzilla series, the shorts made for its annual Godzilla celebration. The series carries on the Japanese tokusatsu tradition with monster suits, miniatures, and practical effects. It’s a format that gives an unfamiliar kaiju a chance to make an impression in a single fight. Fans have already picked the design they want to see, and the short will show how Xenolhu moves and what happens when Godzilla gets close enough to hit it.
The finalists would have made for very different fights. Sagius pitched a mechanical threat, while third-placed Rigedoh was a dragon kaiju, and fourth-placed Gilx was billed as a planetary raider. Fans went with the creature from another dimension. Toho has said the winning design and character details may be adjusted for the movie and merchandise, so the election artwork offers a first look at Xenolhu while the filmmakers work out how to bring it to the screen.
Toho has yet to announce a premiere date for Xenolhu’s short. In the meantime, the official New Monster General Election results show all eight designs, including the seven that came up short.
