EXCLUSIVE: Writer-director Evan Oppenheimer has wrapped on the New York shoot for Out on a Limb, an indie romantic comedy starring Jake Horowitz (The Rivals of Amziah King) and Alice Nokes (Wreck), with Alfred Molina (The Boroughs), Gaten Matarazzo (Stranger Things), Lorraine Toussaint (The Better Sister) and Samuel Arnold (Emily in Paris) in supporting roles.

The film follows an insecure MBA student who fakes a broken ankle and poses as a medical student to win over a free-spirited woman who lives for music and dancing, only to see his lies unravel as real feelings take hold.

Pic is produced by Edward Schmidt, Jay Zellman and Alessandro Penazzi under Ankle Deep LLC. Kirrilee Berger and Julia Abueva round out the cast.

“I love telling New York stories, and this is one of my New York-iest,” said Oppenheimer. “The cast was uniformly phenomenal, and the crew made the shoot more fun and stress-free than I had any right to expect. I’m excited about the next phases and getting the movie out for everyone to enjoy.”

Oppenheimer is a New York-based writer and director whose filmmaking career spans more than two decades. He’s directed nine indie features, the most recent being Peas and Carrots in 2024.

Horowitz is a 2023 Juilliard grad best known for his performance in Amazon’s The Vast of Night, for which he was nominated for Best Actor at the 2021 Critics Choice Super Awards. Most recently, he’s appeared opposite Matthew McConaughey and Kurt Russell in the Black Bear crime thriller The Rivals of Amziah King, which released in August after premiering at South by. Additional credits include Peacock’s Devil in Disguise: John Wayne Gacy and Luca Guadagnino’s Bones and All. The actor is repped by Independent Artist Group and Untitled Entertainment.

Nokes is a British actress based in Manhattan who has worked on stage and screen since the age of 10, first appearing on BBC’s EastEnders, before going on to secure supporting roles in HBO’s Game of Thrones, Apple TV’s Ted Lasso and Amazon’s The Spanish Princess. She later took on leading roles in Channel 5’s Dalgliesh and starred for two seasons in BBC Three and Hulu’s Wreck. She is represented by Rebel Creative Group and Independent Talent.

Molina is repped by Lou Coulson Associates and Anonymous Content; Matarazzo by UTA, Liv Peeke Management & Production, and McKuin Frankel Whitehead; Toussaint by Independent Artist Group, The Artists Partnership, Frontline Management, and Myman Greenspan Fox; and Arnold by IAG, Unbreakable Entertainment, and Bloch Law.
