Energy transition to run gradually with renewable energy focus: DEN

Translate

Bandarlampung, Lampung (ANTARA) - A member of the National Energy Council (DEN) Surono said the energy transition will be carried out gradually, directed toward maximizing the use of renewable energy.

"Actually, the energy transition does not suddenly change everything from fossil energy to renewable energy, but is done slowly while moving toward the use of renewable energy," Surono said at the National Energy Policy Dissemination event at the University of Lampung here on Friday.

According to him, the approach is taken because fossil energy use still supports people’s livelihoods.

"We know that most electricity is still supplied from coal. Many of our brothers and sisters work in coal mines. That cannot simply be stopped and this coal is not imported, so it also still supports workers’ livelihoods," Surono said.

He continued the shift from fossil to renewable energy must still be gradual because Indonesia has various renewable energy reserves that can be maximized.

"Among others is that Indonesia has the world’s largest geothermal energy reserves and potential, around 24 gigawatts, which are not imported," he noted.

He emphasized Lampung has considerable renewable energy potential and can become a strength of regional energy security.

He explained the energy transition has two main parts, which are mitigation of and adaptation to climate change since fossil fuels make the earth hotter and cause climate change, and preparing for energy resilience, self-reliance, and sovereignty.

"I think those are very strategic things that need to be done in carrying out the energy transition," Surono stated.

The National Energy Policy Dissemination event is an important opportunity to share understanding of national energy policy direction, strategic energy security issues, and strengthening of national energy reserves with academics, regional governments, and businesses, including in Lampung.

"The National Energy Council is a national, independent, and permanent body responsible for national energy policy as mandated in the law establishing the council, and we continue to strive to disseminate various matters concerning energy," Surono said.
