Kate Garraway made light of her boyfriend Liam Halligan's redundancy as she joked 'can you still afford me?' in a now-deleted post.

Economist and journalist Liam, 57, who has been dating the 59-year-old Good Morning Britain presenter since April, was recently let go from his post at The Telegraph.

And as he announced the sad career news on X on Saturday, Kate reposted his message alongside a cheeky remark of her own, writing: 'Liam. This doesn’t look good… can you still afford me?'

The star, who added a winking emoji, continued: 'Seriously though – I feel for you. I’ve come to know how much this column & its readers have meant to you over the last 1/4 century. The flood of messages here show the feeling is mutual.'

However, the broadcaster – who herself suffered financial woes with debts of £800,000 after caring for her late husband Derek Draper – seemed to have had a change of heart about her comment, which was seen by The Sun, as hours later it was nowhere to be seen.

The Daily Mail has contacted representatives of Kate Garraway for comment.

Liam updated his followers about his job loss in a lengthy post on X in which he admitted that he was 'extremely disappointed' by the decision to scrap his Economic Agenda column, which he'd been writing full time since 2003.

He noted: 'Why this decision has been made, and whether or not my columns were any good, is for others to judge.

'All I will say is that, as the first person in my family to attend university, sustaining a weekly column in a leading national newspaper for a quarter of a century has been a source of enormous pride for myself and my family.'

Liam also co-hosted a podcast with fellow writer Allison Pearson for the publication, with the journalist confirming that they will continue doing so 'as and when notice periods allow'.

Back in August, it was reported that Kate was 'hurt' by the backlash over her new romance with Liam.

At the time, Kate proved their relationship was going from strength to strength as she shared a photo of them with friends at a birthday party.

However, the couple sadly faced abuse from cruel trolls who took umbrage with Liam having been friends with Kate's late husband.

Derek died in January 2024 aged 56, following his debilitating four-year-long battle with Covid.

An insider close to the couple says Liam 'won't let idiotic trolls get in the way' of their blossoming romance.

It comes after Kate was 'hurt' by the backlash over her new romance with economic journalist Liam (left) after sharing a photo at a friend's party, according to reports

'It was an unexpected surprise for there to be so much interest in Liam and Kate from the off. It could have scared off many men in Liam's position,' a source told The Sun.

'He's in a similar industry to Kate and understands this kind of thing comes with the territory.

'There's no way he'd let some idiot trolls who are commenting on X stop him from pursuing Kate.

'They're great friends and are really enjoying each other's company. Liam's been very supportive of Kate who, despite being hurt by the outcry at first, is now not paying any attention to it.'

The Daily Mail contacted Kate's representative for comment at the time.

The ITV star and Liam have been dating since April but have known each other for 20 years, the Daily Mail previously revealed.

Liam recently spoke about the 'definite spark' he has with Kate as their fledgling romance continues to heat up.

The British economist said the new couple have 'much in common' despite being from 'different parts of the media'.

They were seen giggling and cuddling up together in May as Kate supported him as he took part in the Duchenne Dash, an annual charity cycle ride to Paris.

Liam even said he was 'flabbergasted' to find himself the subject of showbiz news – using the same word that Kate was mocked by Tom Daley for using on Celebrity Traitors last year.

Rumours of a romance first started when the pair were spotted together in Liam's hometown of Saffron Walden in Essex in March.

They were spotted looking cosy during a night out at The Railway Arms pub, during which father-of-three Liam performed with his band.

'It's all very exciting and Kate is giddy. It is just so lovely for her friends and family to see. She will never stop loving Derek and is still grieving but she is finding a way to be happy,' a source told The Mail on Sunday.
