‘La Bola Negra’ Star Guitarricadelafuente to Receive Discovery Award at SCAD Savannah Film Festival (EXCLUSIVE)

“La Bola Negra” star Guitarricadelafuente will be honored with the Discovery Award at this year’s SCAD Savannah Film Festival.
The musician is being recognized for his breakout feature acting debut in the Oscar-buzzy drama.
In the movie, directed by Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi — popularly known as Los Javis — Guitarricadelafuente stars as Sebastián, a soldier during the Spanish Civil War who falls in love with a wounded prisoner (Miguel Bernardeau) he is assigned to guard while he is in hospital.
Guitarricadelafuente, 29, will receive the award following a screening of “La Bola Negra” on Oct. 24.
Sebastian is one of three stories in the film about queer men spanning nearly a century of Spanish history. The ensemble also stars Milo Quife as Carlos, a young man who is rejected from a members-only social club in Granada in 1932 for being gay, and Carlos González as Albert, a queer historian in 2017 who uncovers his own family secrets following the death of his grandfather. Rounding out the cast are Lola Dueñas, Penélope Cruz, Glenn Close and Julio Torres.
Guitarricadelafuente first gained attention in 2018 with “El Conticinio,” a song which he recorded on a PlayStation microphone. That same recording was later chosen for a 2025 Apple commercial directed by Spike Jonze and starring Pedro Pascal. Early hits “Guantanamera” and “Nana Triste” (with Natalia Lacunza) drew 59 million and 70 million streams, respectively. His debut album “La Cantera” was released in 2022 followed by “Spanish Leather” — with a cover shot by Wolfgang Tillmans — in 2025.
Guitarricadelafuente’s original song, “La Nieve,” from “La Bola Negra” is now available to stream.
“La Bola Negra” won the People’s Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival, the Audience Award at the San Sebastián Film Festival and the Best Director Award at Cannes for Calvo and Ambrossi.
Guitarricadelafuente joins previously announced honorees for this year’s SCAD festival, including Helen Mirren (Legend of Entertainment Award), Julianne Moore (Icon Award), and Patrice Vermette (Variety Creative Impact in Production Design Award). The festival runs at The Savannah College of Art and Design Oct. 24-31.
“La Bola Negra” opens in limited release on Oct. 16 before expanding wider and premiering on Netflix on Dec. 2
