The hosts, Bangladesh, started their tournament with a 1-0 win over Bhutan in a Group A match, where the visitors made it as difficult as possible, in Dhaka on Thursday.

The Bengal Tigers started the match much more confident, as they passed the ball around the midfield, trying to find openings. They soon discovered Bhutan’s game plan, which was to play in a low block and only press the ball when it was closer to its own box.

To counter this approach by Bhutan, Bangladesh played the ball to its pacy wingers, who kept attempting to cross the ball into the box. In the first half, this tactic was not fruitful for the hosts since there was no one at the end of the attack to score a goal. Especially since the Tigers started the game without a recognised striker.

The game fell into a repetitive pattern, where the Bangladeshi crosses was not being put away and only created a handful of chances. While Bhutan waited for the off-chance of a counterattack, it pushed players up, only to end in a long-range shot, without bothering the goalkeeper.

The second half provided much of the same, but as players got tired and both head coaches made changes, the structure of both teams did not remain as solid. The substitutes used their fresh legs to try to shake things up; this is when Bhutan’s lack of depth in its squad started to show.

Bangladesh and Bhutan both became riddled with mistakes, but Bangladesh substitute Mohammad Ibrahim was able to pounce on one such mistake by the Bhutan defenders from a Bangladeshi cross. Ibrahim found himself at the right place at the right time to convert from close range after the ball bounced towards him from an erroneous clearance by Bhutan.

Having gone 1-0 up at the 69th minute, neither did Bangladesh open up the game to create more chances, nor did Bhutan have the energy to try to find an equaliser. As tired legs and cramps caught up with both sets of players, the game became extremely stop-start until the end.

A solid win for Bangladesh, who will have to provide a better showing in its next match against Sri Lanka on Wednesday to stand a chance of winning. Bhutan, on the other hand, was almost successful in its game plan to frustrate Bangladesh till the end, until it had nothing more to give.

Recovery will be very important to both sides as they are still in the tournament with a chance to reach the knockouts.
