In 2024, the Kansas City Current turned a fashion event into an opportunity to make a lasting difference in the community. The NWSL club, co-owned by Patrick Mahomes and Brittany Mahomes, teamed up with fashion rental company Nuuly and United Way of Greater Kansas City to donate nearly 100 designer dresses to local young women.

The initiative gave 60 members of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Kansas City a chance to find outfits for special occasions, while also creating an experience centred on confidence, self-expression and feeling valued.

Patrick Mahomes and Brittany Mahomes' KC Current organised a special dress donation event

The October 2, 2024, announcement revealed details of the club's collaboration, which brought fashion and community support together at the Boys & Girls Clubs' Thornberry Unit. The event, held on Tuesday evening, welcomed 60 middle and high school-aged girls.

They could browse through nearly 100 donated designer dresses and choose outfits for homecoming or other important celebrations. The evening also featured a DJ, an interactive flower bar and a photo backdrop, making the experience feel more like a special shopping event than a traditional charity giveaway. Sparkling grape juice added another celebratory touch.Three KC Current players also joined the occasion. Defenders Hailie Mace and Gabrielle Robinson, along with forward Nichelle Prince, helped the girls explore different styles and select dresses they loved.

Nuuly, which sponsors the club's Match Day Arrival, supplied the designer outfits. The subscription-based clothing rental service had more than 250,000 subscribers nationwide at the time.United Way of Greater Kansas City also played an important role by arranging tailors for on-site alterations. Dresses that remained after the event were kept at the Thornberry Unit so other club members could benefit from the collection.

KC Current's partnership focused on confidence and community support

The organisers wanted the evening to offer more than free clothing. For the young participants, choosing an outfit for an important occasion could help them feel comfortable expressing their personalities.“We’re thrilled to partner with the Kansas City Current, Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Kansas City and United Way of Greater Kansas City to help bring this memorable experience to life for these young women,” said Kim Gallagher, Nuuly Executive Director of Marketing and Customer Success.

“At Nuuly, we believe in the power of clothing to inspire confidence and create special moments. It’s an honor to contribute to such a meaningful event.

”Jason Roth, president and CEO of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Kansas City, also highlighted the impact of the initiative.

“This collaboration with the Kansas City Current, Nuuly, and United Way of Greater Kansas City means so much to the young women we serve,” said Jason Roth, president and CEO, Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Kansas City.

“It’s about more than just receiving a dress – it’s about building self-esteem, encouraging self-expression, and creating unforgettable memories. We’re thankful to our partners for creating such a meaningful experience that uplifts and empowers our members.

”For Patrick and Brittany Mahomes, the initiative also reflected the Current's connection with Kansas City beyond the football and soccer fields. Their club's involvement showed how professional sports organisations can use their platforms and partnerships to create meaningful opportunities for local families.
