Lineker Speaks Out On Potential Title-Stripping For Manchester City

Translate

Former England captain and broadcaster Gary Lineker has called on Manchester City to own their situation and accept whatever sanctions come their way following the club’s high-profile financial rule breaches.

Speaking at the Leaders Week sports industry conference at Stamford Bridge, Lineker addressed the ongoing fallout surrounding the Premier League charges and independent commission findings.

While noting that the ongoing saga casts a shadow over English football, Lineker suggested that a cooperative stance from the club would be the best path forward to protect the game’s integrity.

“Obviously it looks really bad for Manchester City, it really does. And bad for the game… I’d love to see Man City now just own it and just say, ‘OK, we got it wrong’,” Lineker said at the Leaders Week sports industry conference at Stamford Bridge.

“‘But for ‌the good of the game, we’ll accept it, we’ll accept whatever punishment comes our way and we’ll carry on’. I think that would be a blessing and save their face a little bit at the moment, though that doesn’t look very likely,” he added.

“But it is damaging… and I feel for their fans, and I feel for their players.

When pressed on whether Manchester City should be stripped of the Premier League titles secured during the period under scrutiny, Lineker admitted it remains a distinct possibility, though he voiced sympathy for those caught in the crossfire.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if it goes down that route. But who suffers from that? The players and the fans.”

As Manchester City prepares to navigate upcoming legal appeals behind closed doors, pressure and public debate continue to mount from figures across the footballing landscape regarding how governing bodies should enforce ultimate sporting penalties.
