Bohol governor urges youth to take up dairy farming, production

TAGBILARAN CITY, Bohol—Bohol Gov. Erico Aristotle Aumentado is encouraging young people to consider dairy farming and milk production as a viable income source and a promising livelihood.

Aumentado made the call during the recent 10th Bohol Dairy Festival held at the Pres. Carlos P. Garcia Multipurpose Center in Talibon, where he highlighted the significant growth of Bohol’s dairy industry over the past decade.

Previously a small-scale activity practiced by only a few Boholanos who produced milk mainly for cheese-making during the Christmas season, the industry has grown substantially. Bohol now produces about 420,000 liters of milk annually, with milk priced at around P60 per liter, generating nearly P26 million in additional income for local farmers.

Romulo Garcia, dairy production coordinator of the Office of the Provincial Veterinarian, said the Bohol Dairy Cooperative, composed of dairy farmers, now earns an estimated P80 million to P90 million annually through its continued supply of milk to the Department of Education and the Department of Social Welfare and Development for their supplementary milk-feeding programs.

The dairy industry has also opened opportunities for young Boholanos to earn from growing forage crops for dairy cattle. Through silage-making, farmers can preserve nutritious animal feed even during the dry season.

“Let us encourage our young people to enter dairy farming and production, and train more dairy professionals who can guide our local industry toward a stronger and more sustainable future,” Aumentado said.

The governor appealed to farmers and dairy producers from 25 municipalities across Bohol.

Aumentado has vowed to strengthen Bohol’s dairy industry as the province aims to establish itself as the “Dairy Capital of the Visayas.”

He said the industry’s first decade has laid the foundation for Bohol to become a leader in dairy production in the Visayas.
