MANILA, Philippines — Kanlaon Volcano on Negros Island recorded four volcanic earthquakes, including a volcanic tremor that lasted 48 minutes, over the past 24 hours as it remained under Alert Level 2 for increased unrest.
State seismologists at PHIVOLCS said Sunday, October 18 that Kanlaon has emitted an average of 1,605 tonnes of sulfur dioxide per day on October 17.
Its plume reached about 300 meters above the volcano and was described as voluminous, drifting south-southwest, south and southwest.
The agency also continued to observe inflation of Kanlaon's edifice with short-term deflation.
Alert Level 2 remains in effect over the volcano, indicating increased unrest.
It said entry into Kanlaon's 4-kilometer-radius permanent danger zone should not be allowed. Flying aircraft close to the volcano is also prohibited.
The agency also warned that sudden steam-driven or phreatic eruptions and precursory magmatic activity remain possible hazards under the current alert level.
