Warning: Spoilers ahead for Peacock's Crystal Lake! After an agonizing 17-year absence, the Friday the 13th franchise finally returned, albeit in a different medium and with an unexpected focus. Crystal Lake, a new television series produced by A24, has arrived in its entirety on Peacock, giving Jason Voorhees fans the opportunity to uncover details of his secret origin story and learn all about his mother, Pamela Voorhees.
Crystal Lake's timeline places the series before the events of the original Friday the 13th and follows single mother Pamela Voorhees (Linda Cardellini) as she grieves the tragic passing of her young, sickly son, Jason (Callum Vinson), after he drowns at Camp Crystal Lake. As she grapples with unimaginable loss, Pam is forced to confront her mysterious past when two ill-intentioned men come to town.
Although not a Friday the 13th movie in the traditional sense, Crystal Lake features its fair share of gnarly, gruesome kills, many of which rank among the bloodiest and most grisly of the entire franchise. Jason gets his hands dirty eventually, but the bulk of these kills are committed by Pam, the protagonist of the series who eventually becomes the shocking slasher in the original Friday the 13th film. In fact, Pamela Voorhees kills 10 characters throughout the first season of Crystal Lake.
Ed Shabani & Benny Mutrux
Pam’s first two kills occur at the end of the series’ first episode. After Pam’s peaceful life was shattered a year prior following the death of her son, her existence is further uprooted by two mysterious men who come to Crystal Lake in pursuit of her. These two men, Ed Shabani (Aaron Serotsky) and Benny Mutrux (Don DiPetta), are enforcers for Bellflower Chemical, a powerful company that is eventually revealed to be the conglomerate that engineered Jason Voorhees into an all-powerful killing machine, capable of surviving nuclear war, through Project Argonaut.
Ed and Benny eventually make their way to Pam’s home, where they confront her about running away from Bellflower. More specifically, the men have been hired by Pam’s husband Elias (Hamish Linklater), who wants Pam and Jason returned to him after they fled years prior due to Pam’s discovery that Bellflower was harming, rather than helping, Jason with their clinical experiments.
Pam goes full mama bear with the two men, however. Before they can take her away and drag her back to Elias, Pam kills both men in an exceedingly brutal and bloody fashion, culminating in an image of her drenched in blood. She soon after disposes of the bodies in the forest surrounding Camp Crystal Lake, although their eventual discovery spells trouble for her.
Valerie
Grace (Gwendolyn Sundstrom) is a key figure in Crystal Lake, whose journey intersects with both Pam’s and the plot of the original Friday the 13th. Grace is a young girl who was one of the few people that was kind and warm to Jason, before his untimely passing. In the wake of Jason’s presumed death, Pam has taken it upon herself to look over Grace, keeping an eye on her at school and ensuring that she avoids trouble with bullies.
Pam eventually becomes aware of the psychological and physical abuse perpetrated by Valerie (Tonya Glanz), Grace’s mother, toward her daughter. Pam sees Grace’s mother drag her daughter out of school and slap her. The physical violence, in addition to a range of disparaging comments, eventually leads Pam to confront Grace’s mom at the restaurant she works at. At this point, the restaurant is closed for the night, meaning Pam and Valerie are the only two people in the building. Pam attempts to have a reasonable conversation with Grace’s mom, but she is antagonistic and defensive, refusing to take heed of Pam’s advice to treat Grace with more kindness and respect.
The conversation de-evolves into violence when Grace’s mom insults Pam’s capacity as a parent given her failure to keep Jason safe. The fury this comment invokes leads Pam to hit Grace’s mom in the face with a pan, in turn detaching her jaw from her mouth. Pam then places Grace’s mom’s head into a deep fat fryer, where she burns to a crisp. To cover her tracks, Pam burns the entire restaurant down.
Claudette
Claudette (Danielle Kotch) was one of the camp counselors who was tasked with looking after all the kids at Camp Crystal Lake on the day that Jason drowned. Instead of doing her job, Claudette was having sex with her boyfriend Barry (Phoenix Parnevik) in a nearby cabin.
In a stunning re-creation of the opening scene of the original Friday the 13th movie, Crystal Lake reveals that it is Grace, not Pam, who is the first-person POV at the start of the film. As such, it is Grace, not Pam, who enters the hut in which Claudette and Barry are having sex and murders Barry. Grace commits this act of violence as she has taken psychedelic substances provided to her by visiting hippies and, out of her right mind, seeks brutal revenge against Claudette, who has bullied her at school.
But it's not Grace who ultimately kills Claudette. After killing Barry, Grace retreats in shock, while Pam enters the scene similarly abhorred at what she sees. Both to keep Grace safe and to seek revenge of her own against Claudette for the role her negligence played in the death of Jason, Pam corners and eventually kills the camp counselor.
Shutterbug, Space Ghost, Rhiannon, Gabe & Stella Blue
Pam then proceeds to unleash hell on a group of visiting hippies, who gave Grace the psychedelic substance that led her to kill Barry. This sequence shows Pam at her most monstrous and feral in the series as she takes down a whopping six hippies – Shutterbug (Drew Scheid), Space Ghost (Albert DiCesare), Stella Blue (Lark White), Rhiannon (April Consalo), and Gabe (Philip Themio Stoddard) – in increasingly brutal fashion.
Pam first kills Shutterbug by stabbing a knife through the lens of his camera and into his face. She then proceeds to kill the shirtless Space Ghost off-camera. After this, she slits the throat of Rhiannon as she has sex with Gabe, who is subsequently drenched in her blood. Pam then finishes Gabe off with a knife in the neck.
Pam then makes her way to the main camp, where she slits the throat of Stella Blue and proceeds to stab her multiple times in the chest. Harmony (Manon Gage), the leader of the group, flees in a bus, while Plato manages to run away to the lake, where Grace awaits. When Pam eventually makes her way to the lake, Plato is dead, presumably at the hands of Grace.
Dr. Valentine
Pam’s most brutal kill of the series is saved for last. In the penultimate episode, the full origin story of Pam and Jason Voorhees is detailed, explaining how Jason was an experiment from Bellflower Chemical to alter human DNA to make people invulnerable to radiation, given the perceived inevitability of a nuclear war.
Upon realizing the harm that Bellflower’s experiments were enacting on her son, Pam takes it upon herself to rescue Jason from the Bellflower facility and go on the run. To do this, Pam plays the role of a supportive wife at a Bellflower gala before retreating to a nearby lab, where she discovers Jason hooked up to a machine.
Pam breaks Jason out of his constraints before she is confronted by Dr. Valentine (Jeffrey Bean), the lead scientist overseeing the Bellflower experiments. Dr. Valentine tries to manipulate Pam into keeping Jason with Bellflower, but Pam sees through Valentine’s trickery and proceeds to deliver her most grotesque kill of the season.
Approaching Dr. Valentine with determination, Pam picks up an electric drill and shoves it into the physician’s face, immediately obliterating and disfiguring it. Unlike many horror films and shows that cut away once graphic violence starts, Crystal Lake lingers on the imagery of the electric drill viciously chewing through the muscle tissue and bone of Dr. Valentine’s face. There are a handful of other kills in the series perpetrated by others, namely Jason’s murder of his father, but none come close to the viciousness of Pamela Voorhees’ final kill of the season.
All eight episodes of Crystal Lake are now streaming on Peacock.
