MCA may sit out Melaka polls amid seat talks

Translate

MELAKA: MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong remained unsure whether the party would contest the upcoming Melaka state election, saying it would assess the progress of negotiations over the next few days.

Asked whether MCA had decided not to participate in the state election, Wee said there was still time to resolve the matter before nomination day on Oct 31, Oriental Daily reported.

"There is still a week before nomination day on Oct 31, and we hope the situation can be rectified.

"Our two incumbent Melaka assemblymen have also mentally prepared themselves," he said.

He said the same issue had not arisen in Johor and Negri Sembilan, where the parties had reached agreements and worked together.

"That is the true spirit of Barisan Nasional. I believe we can follow the example of Johor and Negri Sembilan, work together and win in this state," Wee said.

Wee said MCA had not boycotted BN's election machinery launch in Melaka that night, but said the party would no longer tolerate contradictory statements from certain individuals.

"MCA's state leaders did not know, and the central leadership did not know either. We did not come here to boycott the event.

"We had already arrived at the venue, but what happened there was completely different from what we had been told.

"We decided to walk out collectively to uphold our party's dignity. This reflects the decision of the entire party, and we are deeply saddened that this had to happen," he said.
