Gauteng residents can expect a hot and mostly dry weekend, with temperatures climbing into the mid-30s in some areas, according to the South African Weather Service.

Pretoria is forecast to reach a low of 16°C and a high of 32°C on Saturday. Temperatures are expected to rise to 34°C on Sunday, with no rain anticipated in the capital.

In Johannesburg, temperatures could reach 30°C on Saturday, bringing warm to hot conditions to the City of Gold.

According to the South African Weather Service (SAWS), some parts of southern Gauteng may be partly cloudy, with a chance of showers and thunderstorms.

Hot conditions are expected to continue into next week, with little to no rainfall forecast across much of the province.

How to cope with the hot weather

With temperatures expected to soar, residents are encouraged to take precautions to protect themselves from the heat.

Avoid peak sun hours: Stay indoors or in the shade, particularly between 11:00 and 15:00, when the sun is typically strongest.

Dress for the heat: Wear loose-fitting, lightweight and light-coloured clothing made from breathable fabrics.

Use sun protection: Apply sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30, wear a wide-brimmed hat and use UV-blocking sunglasses when outdoors.

Keep your body cool: Use a cool, damp cloth on your neck, wrists, forehead or armpits to help lower your body temperature.

Reschedule exercise: Plan workouts and strenuous outdoor activities for the early morning or late evening, when temperatures are generally cooler.

Stay hydrated: Drink water regularly throughout the day, even if you do not feel thirsty, and limit drinks that may contribute to dehydration.

Residents should also check the latest South African Weather Service updates for changes in local conditions and possible weather warnings.
