Range Signs ‘Chef’s Table’s David Gelb

EXCLUSIVE: Range has signed David Gelb, the four-time James Beard Award–winning, Emmy- and Grammy-nominated filmmaker, for representation.

Known for his work in the culinary world, Gelb’s critically acclaimed debut feature Jiro Dreams of Sushi, which he shot and produced himself in a 10-seat Tokyo subway-station restaurant, laid the foundation for Chef’s Table, Netflix’s first original documentary series. Spanning seven seasons and six spinoffs — France, Pizza, BBQ, Noodles, Pastry, and Legends — the 11-time Emmy-nominated series introduces audiences to global culinary stars who are redefining gourmet food. Just this week, Netflix announced that the show will return with two new seasons — Chef’s Table: Icons and Chef’s Table: Desserts — with Gelb directing all eight episodes.

Beyond his work on the culinary scene, Gelb directed Stan Lee, the documentary chronicling the comics legend’s life and legacy in his own words, released to mark what would have been Lee’s 100th birthday. He also created Marvel’s 616, an anthology docuseries, and directed Obi-Wan Kenobi: A Jedi’s Return for Lucasfilm and Disney+.

Gelb’s broader filmography includes creating the Netflix series Street Food, producing the Grammy-nominated Steve Aoki doc I’ll Sleep When I’m Dead, and directing the doc Wolfgang on celebrity chef Wolfgang Puck. On the scripted side, he’s directed on Ryan Murphy’s American Horror Stories and helmed narrative feature The Lazarus Effect, a genre-bending horror flick starring Mark Duplass, Olivia Wilde, Donald Glover, Evan Peters, and Sarah Bolger.

Also highly active in the commercial space, Gelb has directed short- and long-form campaigns for Apple, Google, Starbucks, Chipotle, Chase, Bank of America, United, Burger King, Intel, Mazda, and Ford. He continues to be represented by Myman Greenspan Fox.
