Essex cricketer Robin Das charged with rape as club issues statement

Essex cricketer Robin Das, 24, has been charged with two counts of rape.

The Metropolitan Police said that Das, of Waltham Forest, east London, was charged following reports that a woman was raped in Brixton, south London, on 30 March 2024.

He was arrested in August last year and charged in July, and is now due to appear at Inner London Crown Court on 9 October.

His case was heard at Croydon Magistrates’ Court on 11 September where it was sent to crown court, according to court documents.

The Met confirmed the woman is being supported by specialist officers.

A statement released by Essex read: “Essex County Cricket Club can confirm that a male member of the playing staff, currently under contract with the club, recently appeared in court in relation to an incident that took place outside club activities.

“Throughout, the club has remained in contact with the ECB (England and Wales Cricket Board), PCA (Professional Cricketers’ Association), the Cricket Regulator and the player with regard to the matter, which included an immediate and ongoing suspension.

“The club will continue to follow all appropriate legal processes and guidance.”

It added it will not be able to make any further comment as legal proceedings are taking place.

Das made his debut for the club in 2020 aged 18.

Confirmation of the charge comes ahead of the final round of the County Championship, with Essex still having work to do to cement their status as a Division One club.

Essex are currently 19 points clear of Leicestershire, who occupy the final relegation spot. Leicestershire were hit with a 27-point deduction last week after breaching pitch regulations back in August. They have appealed the decision, with the final ruling set to have significant implications for Leicestershire and Essex.

In the final round of fixtures, Essex are facing Glamorgan in Cardiff, while Leciestershire take on league leaders Warwickshire at Edgbaston.

Warwickshire have an 11-point advantage over Somerset heading into the final round of games, while Nottinghamshire are four points further back, with all three clubs still in the title hunt.

The final round of games began on Thursday morning, with the County Championship season set to draw to a close this weekend after over five months of action.
