Egypt overtakes Spain, France, Croatia, Serbia in Taranto 2026 medal standings

Egyptian teams competing at the Mediterranean Games in Taranto continued their strong performances, winning medals and propelling Egypt past Spain, France, Croatia and Serbia in the overall medal standings.

In sport, some athletes compete simply to make up the numbers, while others seek to leave their mark in the history books.

In Taranto, Egypt is not merely competing for numbers, it is showcasing a new philosophy: what matters is not how many athletes a delegation brings, but how many champions can carry their country’s flag to the podium.

This has been the story of Egypt at the Mediterranean Games, where the Pharaohs have climbed to fifth place in the medal table with 13 medals, surpassing major sporting powers including Spain, France, Croatia and Serbia.

Egypt has also maintained its position at the top of the Arab medal standings, five medals ahead of Tunisia.

Perhaps the most significant figure, however, is not the 13 medals but the number that preceded it: 196. That is the number of Egyptian athletes competing at the Games, compared with much larger delegations numbering more than 300 or even 400 athletes.

Italy has 498 athletes, Turkey 334, France 330, Greece 281, Algeria 268 and Spain 249.

So far, Egypt’s medals have come from three main sports, swimming, fencing and wrestling, highlighting the depth and diversity of Egyptian sport and its ability to produce champions across multiple disciplines.

Behind this performance is close coordination among Olympic champion and Minister of Youth and Sports Gohar Nabil, Egyptian Olympic Committee President Yasser Idris, and the national sports federations, based on a simple but challenging principle: Egypt does not need the largest delegation; it needs the strongest delegation.

Minister Gohar Nabil was keen to be present alongside the athletes, providing support and encouragement during his attendance at the opening ceremony.

Meanwhile, Yasser Idris overcame his grief following the death of his mother, which coincided with the start of the competitions and caused him to arrive in Italy later than planned, in order to support the Egyptian delegation and follow its performances.

Egypt’s 13 medals have placed the country firmly among the leading nations and kept it at the top of the Arab standings, with four gold, four silver and five bronze medals, as follows:
