Driver flees crash scene in Kedah, leaves behind RM6m cannabis haul in MPV

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 25 — A man’s escape from the scene after the MPV he was driving was involved in a crash on the southbound North-South Expressway near Kota Setar, Kedah, led police to uncover 72kg of cannabis flowers worth nearly RM6 million in the vehicle.

The incident occurred at about 6pm yesterday when the man abandoned the Toyota Wish after it overturned after hitting the rear of a Toyota Hilux four-wheel-drive vehicle, according to a Harian Metro report.

Police from Kedah then inspected the Toyota Wish and found four luggage bags inside.

A source said each bag contained 30 plastic packets believed to contain cannabis.

“This brought the total seizure to 120 packets of cannabis weighing about 72kg.

“The total value of the drugs is estimated at nearly RM6 million.

The source said the Toyota Wish driver fled the crash scene by crossing the road beside the expressway before he was believed to have hitched a ride or travelled pillion on a motorcycle.

“Checks found that the man was a local with one previous record linked to an offence under Section 28J of the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (Sosma), for which he had been convicted.

“Following the discovery of the drugs, police are now working to track down the man, who is suspected of smuggling the drugs from a neighbouring country,” the source said.

Meanwhile, Bukit Aman Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department (NCID) director Datuk Hussein Omar Khan confirmed the case.

“We are investigating various angles, including the suspect’s drug syndicate network in the neighbouring country.

“The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952,” he said.
