Indonesia announces UNSC candidacy for 2029-2030

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Foreign Minister Sugiono announced Indonesia's candidacy for a non-permanent member seat on the United Nations Security Council before the 81st Session of the UN General Assembly.

"Indonesia presents its candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for the 2029-2030 term," Sugiono said while delivering Indonesia's national statement before the UN General Assembly in New York on Saturday (September 26) local time.

He explained that Indonesia will bring the commitment of "Fostering Unity, Advancing Peace" to its candidacy at the UNSC.

According to Sugiono, fostering unity means building trust in the multilateral system and keeping channels of dialogue open.

Meanwhile, advancing peace requires the country to uphold international law and make effective use of the tools for that purpose.

Sugiono considers Indonesia as the right country to be a member of the UNSC given its strong national commitment to contributing to world peace and conflict resolution.

"Our Constitution mandates us to contribute to the world based on the values of freedom, lasting peace, and social justice through diplomacy and mediation," he said.

The Foreign Minister also highlighted Indonesia's position as one of the largest contributors to UN peacekeeping missions since 1957, with the participation of Indonesian personnel as peacekeepers in Lebanon under UNIFIL having lasted for 20 years.

Sugiono emphasized that Indonesia will continue to keep dialogue open, build common ground, and turn shared responsibilities into concrete cooperation if given the space to contribute as part of the UN Security Council.

"We will bring the same principle that guides our foreign policy to engage with all parties, while keeping space for cooperation open," he added.

In the Annual Press Statement of the Minister of Foreign Affairs (PPTM) delivered on January 14, 2026, Sugiono announced Indonesia's plan to nominate itself as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the 2029-2030 period and will immediately begin a campaign to garner support.

Indonesia has served as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council four times, in the periods 1973-1974, 1995-1996, 2007-2008, and 2019-2021.

Indonesia also held the presidency of the UN Security Council in August 2020.
