Western Visayas marks martial law anniversary peacefully, cops say

ILOILO CITY, Philippines — The 54th anniversary of the declaration of martial law was observed peacefully in Western Visayas on Monday, Sept. 21, with no major untoward incidents reported in monitored areas, according to the Police Regional Office 6 (PRO6).

PRO6 said it deployed 5,155 police personnel, augmentation forces and community force multipliers across the region to secure various gatherings and activities.

Police units were placed on full alert status ahead of the commemoration, with personnel tasked with maintaining visibility, managing traffic and crowds, monitoring developments and securing key areas.

Regional director Brig. Gen. Randulf Tuaño thanked the public, organizers, partner agencies and police personnel for their cooperation.

“The peaceful commemoration is proof that our fellow countrymen can express their views while respecting the law, order and the rights of everyone,” Tuaño said.

PRO6 said its security measures were intended to maintain peace and order while protecting the public’s right to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression.

The regional police office urged the public to remain vigilant and report incidents or suspicious activities through Unified 911 or the nearest police station. /cb
