Sydney Mardi Gras party to return in 2027 after financial woes

The Sydney Mardi Gras party will return for 2027 after financial woes led to the event's sudden cancellation in February and left its future in doubt.

Mardi Gras CEO Jesse Matheson on Thursday announced the post-parade celebration would take place on March 6 inside the tunnels underneath Sydney Football Stadium, with the full line-up of performers to drop next Tuesday.

"From 10pm to 6am we are transforming the spaces underneath one of Sydney s most iconic stadiums into an electrifying playground of music, light performance and unapologetic queer celebration," he said.

"The Mardi Gras party has for generations been an event where friendships are formed, people have found their community and unforgettable memories were made.

"I know how much you missed it last [festival] and I missed it too."

Tough times for festival

The highly-anticipated afterparty was axed just weeks out from the February 28 parade, with Mr Matheson citing at the time that the event had been running at "significant financial loss" for two years.

The annual party, which previously hosted headliners including Kylie Minogue, Cher and Dua Lipa, was once a cash cow for the Mardi Gras parade.

But Mr Matheson said the 2026 event was estimated to cost about $2 million, making it more expensive than the parade itself.

Organisers had also faced other setbacks, including losing the main headline artist during the Christmas break and having the subsequent replacement act drop out.

Mr Matheson said the "festival within a festival" had been running at a deficit since 2020 and uncertainty around new sponsorship posed an "existential threat to the future of Mardi Gras".

The cancellation allowed for breathing space to stabilise the organisation, with Mr Matheson saying he was pleased to announce the return of the "Mardi Gras institution".

"We are re-imagining one of the most iconic parties in LGBTQIA+ history for a whole new era," he said.

"I could not be more excited for the future of Mardi Gras.

"It's half a century and we are only just getting started."

Comedian Bob Downe and Stefan Elliot will be celebrating their 10th wedding anniversary during Mardi Gras, where they first met.

While the identity of the parade afterparty headliner remains shrouded in secrecy, Mr Elliot said it was the local talent he was most looking forward to seeing.

"We really enjoy the community shows, we are friends with a lot of the drag queens and the performers and the local acts," he said.

Downe, who will host the festival's Doggywood pet show, agreed.

"I think it should go back to more of a community thing and not try and sell tickets just on who's appearing," he said.

The 49th Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Festival will run from February 12 to March 7, featuring an additional week of celebrations than previous events.

Among the musical highlights which have already been announced are Australian pop-rock band Rogue Traders and Zippora, who will headline the first event of the festival at Victoria Park on Valentine's Day.

The festival will then takeover Oxford Street on March 6 for the annual Mardi Gras parade, with the route added to the National Heritage List earlier this year.

Singer Clementine Douglas will headline closing celebrations at Laneway.

Member ticket sales open on November 9, with general and party pre-sale tickets to go on sale on November 12.
