Steven Spielberg’s Landmark Supernatural Adaptation Is Officially Resurrected From The Dead On Streaming

One of Steven Spielberg's supernatural films from more than 30 years ago has been revived at the perfect time. Spielberg is best known for directing and producing movies like Jaws, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Indiana Jones and Jurassic Park. He has leaned into the sci-fi genre a lot throughout his career, but the acclaimed filmmaker has also dabbled in supernatural stories as well.

One such supernatural movie that Spielberg produced was Casper, which came out in 1995 and stars Christina Ricci and Bill Pullman as a daughter and father who move into a haunted mansion and come face to face with a group of ghosts, including the titular Casper. The friendly ghost finds a friend in Ricci's Kat Harvey, and the two develop a close bond. Brad Silberling directed the film, with Sherri Stoner and Deanna Oliver serving as screenwriters.

Spielberg's Casper Is Back & Haunting Disney+'s Top 10

Just in time for spooky season, Casper has been resurrected from the dead, thanks to its availability on Hulu and Hulu on Disney+. (It's also streaming on Peacock.) As of September 30, 2026, the film is No. 10 on Disney+'s Top 10 movies chart in the United States, behind Toy Story 5, Spidey and the Avengers: Halloween Team-Up!, Toy Story, Toy Story 2, Toy Story 3, Toy Story 4, The Mandalorian and Grogu and Coraline.

With Toy Story 5 now streaming on Disney+, it makes sense for that entire franchise to fill up several spots in the Top 10. But with Halloween about a month away, horror and supernatural flicks like Coraline and Casper are now starting to surge up the charts. It appears to be the first time this season that Casper has surfaced in the Top 10.

The Film Remains A Landmark In Cinema History

Casper was a groundbreaking movie in the '90s because it was the first one to have a fully CGI character in a leading role. This paved the way for so many other films to do the same, including with Gollum in The Lord of the Rings, Dobby in Harry Potter, Jar Jar Binks in Star Wars and the Na'vi in Avatar.

After being released in May 1995, Casper debuted at No. 1 on opening weekend and went on to gross $290 million throughout its theatrical run. Despite being a landmark achievement in cinematic history, reviews weren't kind to Casper at the time, earning a 59% critic score and 51% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, but it's since become a family-friendly classic and is almost always a part of Freeform's lineup leading up to Halloween every October. Now, thanks to streaming, audiences are continuing to discover and re-watch Casper, even after 31 years.
