PCG continues search for eight missing MV June Aster passengers

The search for the eight missing passengers of the MV June Aster is still ongoing in the vicinity of Calanhayaun Island in Barangay Tara in Coron, Palawan, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) said on Sunday.

“Personnel from the Coast Guard District Palawan (CGDPAL) Disaster Response Group (DRG), Special Operations Group (SOG), BRP Suluan (MRRV-4406), and Marine Environmental Protection–Northeastern Palawan (MEP-NEP) conducted maritime and foot patrols, shoreline security monitoring, and Coastal Monitoring Patrol (CMP) in the vicinity of the vessel,” the PCG said.

The Coast Guard said it also deployed HSRB-011 and rubber boats to conduct maritime patrols and search-and-rescue (SAR) operations, while using drones to carry out aerial surveillance over coastal and surrounding areas.

During the operation, the PCG also said that there is no oil sheen observed in the vicinity waters.

A total of 77 fatalities have been confirmed, eight are still missing, and only 43 survived the deadly ferry fire off Coron on the evening of September 9.

Authorities have yet to determine the cause of the blaze. —Vince Angelo Ferreras/RF, GMA News
