EPL: Brentford Cruise Past Big-Spending Spurs

Translate

Tottenham endured a disastrous opening day to the 2026/27 Premier League season, slumping to a 3-0 defeat against Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium on Saturday.

Goals from Keane Lewis-Potter, Vitaly Janelt, and Michael Kayode handed Roberto De Zerbi’s revamped side a sobering reality check.

Spurs finished 17th, safe by just two points, last season and the club hopes to avoid a similar season by spending plenty of dough on player for manager Roberto De Zerbi after he rallied them away from relegation.

But it was steady, solid Brentford who looked the European contender after missing out on the Conference League on tiebreakers last season.

However, Lewis-Potter put Brentford in front with a simple side-footed finish in the 12th minute, after new signing Sangare played a one-two with Thiago and burst into the penalty area to provide the assist.

It was 2-0 just after the half-hour mark, with Richarlison putting Spurs in trouble when he lost the ball cheaply near halfway. Mathias Jensen’s long-range effort was only parried by Kinsky, and a grateful Janelt tapped into an unguarded net.

It was a similar story for Brentford’s third goal, which arrived via Kayode in the 49th minute after Kinsky’s failure to hold onto a stinging volley from the impressive Sangare

It could’ve been a bigger score line had Igor Thiago not hit the post from the penalty spot.
