KwaZulu-Natal town with R600 000 homes and fewer than 150 crimes a year

In KwaZulu-Natal, where 95 of the 169 police precincts reported crime increasing, one town stands out.

Crime is down 20.6% over the last ten years in this town.

Safe KwaZulu-Natal Town

Hattingspruit has a 1.48% crime rate.

It’s a small coal-mining town on the banks of the Tom Worthington Dam.

In the 12 months ending March 2026, crime is down 11.8%.

Crime in the first quarter of 2026 is down 33% compared to the first quarter of 2025.

Three-quarters of its 10 078 residents are over 50, according to property and 2022 census data.

These residents enjoy an area where only 149 crimes were reported in 12 months.

Crime in Hattingspruit

The largest crime category in Hattingspruit is assault. Serious and common assault accounts for 37.6% of the town’s crimes.

Both categories are up compared to last year.

Worringly, so are residential burglaries.

According to data from the South African Police Service (SAPS), the town has experienced a spate of residential burglaries.

Between April 2026 and March 2025, 15 residential burglaries were reported in the town.

The year before, there were only 8.

Property in Hattingspruit

Homes rarely hit the market in Hattingspruit.

This year only two sales were registered at the deeds office.

Last year followed a similar pattern: only two sales.

But when homes are on the market, buyers can expect to spend very little to acquire a home in the town.

According to current market data, the average sale price between this year’s two sales is R450 000.

One was an R850 000 home, and the other was a plot of land on the town’s main road.

Current listings show buyers can purchase a home for as little as R532 000.

Another listing advertises a 3-bedroom home listed for R495 000.

The most expensive listing is a 202-hectare farm selling for R6.24 million.

Life in Hattingspruit

Hattingspruit is a town for those who enjoy the outdoors.

Although the town is quiet and relatively crime-free, there’s plenty to keep residents entertained, especially those in or nearing retirement.

Residents can enjoy bass and carp fishing and other water activities offered by the town’s proximity to the dam.

But the town is also close to amenities.

A nine-minute drive to the larger town of Dannhauser, where residents can find a basic shopping district.

Newcastle is 45 minutes away.

Those craving the coast will need to travel four hours to Richards Bay.
