PREVIEW for October 2026 SASSA Old-Age Grants

Translate

We’re taking a look ahead to October 2026 SASSA Old-Age Grants. The day to earmark for payment is Friday 2 October 2026 for the nation’s four-million elderly beneficiaries.

The gap between next month’s payment and September’s is exactly 30 days. So, not as bad as the 33-day wait back in August, but not as timeous as last month’s 28 days.

Nevertheless, the topic on everyone’s minds for October 2026 SASSA Old-Age Grants is what’s happening with mid-cycle top-ups?

This has been a particularly frustrating sub-story ahead of next month’s disbursements.

The agency continues to be silent on the matter, and that void is allowing a slew of misinformation to fill the void on social media …

OCTOBER 2026 SASSA OLD-AGE GRANTS

Principally, there are a growing number of online petitions/protests demanding that South African Social Security Agency Old-Age Grants be increased to R5 000 per month.

A conspicuous lack of confirmation from the agency on whether October 2026 SASSA Old-Age Grants will be topped-up at all is only fuelling this sentiment.

What we do know for sure is that grants increased by R80 back in April 2026:

  • SASSA Old-Age Grants 60 to 74 years old – R2 400 (up from R2 320)
  • SASSA Old-Age Grants 75 years and older – R2 420 (up from R2 340)

Should the new Minister of Social Development Dina Pule surprise us all with an October 2026 top-up … time is ticking to make it official.

Over the last two years, October top-ups amounted to just R10.

Therefore, if it were to repeat, 60 to 74 would increase to R2 410 and 75 and older would be R2 430.

Although highly unlikely, a R20 increase to stave off the current inflation crisis, would see grants jump to R2 420 (60 to 74) and R2 440 (75 and older), respectively.

STRICTER REVIEWS FOR OCTOBER 2026 SASSA OLD-AGE GRANTS

As ever, October 2026 SASSA Old-Age Grants are coming under stricter scrutiny.

The National Treasury announced that the cancellation of more than 300 000 suspect profiles had saved upwards of R170 million.

However, the DSD also revealed in parliament earlier this year that the social welfare budget was underspent by R4.8 billion.

As we’ve reported before, simple arithmetic says that figure could see a R100 monthly increase for all four-million Old-Age Grant recipients without so much as a budget adjustment.

SASSA cross-references all your personal data against a host of government departments and banks.

Therefore, anyone who has been claiming a government grant that shouldn’t be will be found out eventually.

Worse still, if you are caught misrepresenting your means, not only will you lose your grant, but you will have to pay back your ill-gotten SASSA money.

So, it’s not worth the risk if you know you genuinely don’t qualify for state assistance.

WHEN DOES DEFERRED SASSA PAYMENT LAND IN OCTOBER 2026?

For those who are reviewed by the agency and clear their names in time, they receive a deferred payment on a special fourth payment date.

Next month this falls much later, on Wednesday, 7 October 2026.

To make things tougher, the agency has also increased the income (means) and asset eligibility for October 2026 SASSA Old-Age Grants:

  • Your income must be less than R9 350 (single) or R18 700 (married) per month
  • This adds up to R112 200 (single) or R224 400 (married) per year
  • Total assets (property) in your name cannot be worth more than R1 584 000 (single) or R3 168 000 (married)

Plus, here’s what you need to show the agency when applying for October 2026 SASSA Old-Age Grants:

  • Official RSA identity document (ID) preferably a Smart ID Card with digital ID photo.
  • Valid three months’ statement certified by your bank, plus copies.
  • All documents proving your marital status, plus death certificates if necessary.
  • Proof of residence (a utility bill with your name on it, not older than three months).
  • Documents proving your income and/or financial dividends (very important).
  • Comprehensive information regarding assets/valuation of any property you own.
  • Full declaration of any and all private pension in your name.
  • Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) membership book, or discharge certificate from your previous job.
  • A copy of your will, first and final liquidation and distribution accounts if your spouse has passed away in the last five years.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO BE APPROVED FOR SASSA OLD-AGE GRANTS?

Next month’s new applicants will only receive first payments in the new year. However, they will be backdated. Image: File

October 2026 SASSA Old-Age Grants typically take around three months to be processed, so, you will receive your first payment only in January 2027.

However, you will be back paid to the date of your first application, so, three months in the first tranche.

But that’s assuming you have all your documents correct at the first time of asking.

It is now possible to complete eLife certification and biometric verification at the agency’s online service portal HERE to save time and beat the queues.

Plus, if you’re too old, sick or live in a remote rural area you can get a loved one to help with your October 2026 SASSA Old-Age Grants application.

All you need is a letter from your doctor. And all of the above documentation copied and certified by a commissioner of oaths.

If you are denied the grant you do have three months to appeal the decision with the DSD HERE.

You can always try to contact SASSA directly here:
