Ghana will host the Federation of African Journalists (FAJ) Conference in the first quarter of 2027 after the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) secured the bid, its President, Albert Dwumfour, has announced.

Speaking at the 30th GJA Media Awards in Accra, Mr Dwumfour said the successful bid was among a series of continental achievements recorded by the Association in the past four years.

He also cited Ghana's successful bids to host the African Media Convention and the FAJ Steering Committee Meeting as part of efforts to strengthen the country's influence in Africa's media landscape.

“Within the past four years, the Ghana Journalists Association has chalked up significant continental achievements, further elevating Ghana's profile and influence in Africa's media landscape,” he said.

Mr Dwumfour described the successful bids as a double victory for Ghana, arguing that the achievements extended beyond the Association to enhance the country's standing in continental media affairs.

“This is a double win, a double victory for Ghana. These are not merely organizational victories for the GJA. They are significant national achievements and a great recognition for Ghana,” he said.

He added that the achievements affirmed Ghana's role in promoting press freedom, democratic governance and media development across Africa.

The GJA President said hosting the FAJ Conference would provide an opportunity for Ghana to contribute to discussions on the future of journalism on the continent.

“By attracting this prestigious continental event to Ghana, the GJA is not only strengthening its international partnerships, but also creating opportunities for Ghana to shape conversations on the future of African journalism,” he said.

The conference is expected to bring together journalists from across Africa to discuss issues including press freedom, professional journalism and the safety of media practitioners.

Mr Dwumfour said the event would be held under the leadership of President John Dramani Mahama and the Chairperson of the African Union Commission.

The GJA is expected to begin preparations ahead of the conference, scheduled for the first quarter of 2027.
