Based on the bestselling book series by Elle Kennedy, Off Campus has the character dynamics that take a page from shows like One Tree Hill as well as the good old-fashioned opposites-attract chemistry that fans can’t get enough of. But for all its familiar tropes, Off Campus dares to break from lighthearted conventions and tackle more serious issues with care and nuance, giving viewers plenty of reasons to keep coming back to the Prime Video hit.

What Is 'Off Campus' About?

Set at the fictional Briar University, Off Campus' first season revolves around the burgeoning romance between Garrett Graham (Belmont Cameli) and Hannah Wells (Ella Bright). Garrett is the son of legacy hockey player Phil Graham (Steve Howey), and he plans on following in his father's footsteps by joining the NHL. When his poor grades threaten his chances at a hockey career, Garrett asks straight-A student Hannah to tutor him for his upcoming philosophy midterms.

Unlike Garrett, Hannah isn’t part of a legacy family. A scholarship student, she spends most of her time studying or working her two part-time jobs. Her grades remain her priority, but she also has a crush on musician Justin Kohl (Josh Heuston), which doesn't go unnoticed by Garrett. Seeing an opportunity, Garrett proposes a deal: if Hannah tutors him, he'll pretend to date her to catch Justin’s attention.

'Off Campus' Gets Refreshingly Real About Tough Subjects

Off Campus Season 1 hooks audiences with Garrett and Hannah's clear romantic chemistry as the two struggle to resist their growing feelings. In the latter episodes, however, Off Campus tackles serious themes without trivializing or sensationalizing them for the sake of a happily ever after. By addressing the aftermath of sexual assault, Off Campus shows how intimacy may look different for those who have experienced trauma while not invalidating how the characters choose to pursue that intimacy.

Season 1 of Off Campus also explores the effects of abusive parents from the perspective of a male athlete. Hockey players are expected to take the pain because of the hyper-masculine nature of the sport, and vulnerability is seen as a shortcoming. But Off Campus shows that even the strongest man on the ice rink isn't immune to emotional distress. As the season demonstrates, healing is possible, and it can be as simple as opening up to your friends instead of hiding that pain.

'Off Campus' Season 2 Is Set to Follow in 'Bridgerton's Footsteps

Garrett and Hannah aren't the only ones stealing the show in Off Campus. In the background of Season 1, another romance is brewing. Dean Di Laurentis (Stephen Kalyn) and Allie Hayes (Mika Abdalla) are Garrett and Hannah's best friends, respectively. Dean is also a hockey player, and while he may not come from sports royalty, he does come from a wealthy background. As for Allie, she's the complete opposite of Hannah — loud, vivacious, and determined to live life to the fullest.

With Season 2 of Off Campus confirmed to be adapting the third book in Kennedy's series, The Score, the series' return will put Dean and Allie at the center of the ice. The pair shared a fiery secret fling in Season 1, and Season 2 will bring even more heat when a hockey rival from Dean's past crashes the party. While Season 3 has yet to be confirmed, another love story is waiting in the wings between John Logan (Antonio Cipriano) and Grace Ivers (India Fowler), who are highlighted in Kennedy's second book, The Mistake. It's a format reminiscent of Bridgerton, and if Netflix's hit romance has proven anything since its debut, it's that audiences love watching would-be couples blossom — and Off Campus is already poised to achieve the same level of success.
