Hollywood couples who chose not to have children: From Dolly Parton and Carl Dean to John Cena and Shay Shariatzadeh
‘DINK (Dual Income, No Kids)’ might be a modern term, but many Hollywood celebrities opted to focus on their lives and careers with a fulfilling mindset. Whether choosing not to be stressed with the fate of another life in their hands or to live with freedom without the ticker in the back of their minds, the couples led their life with passion, love, and potential. From Dolly Parton and Carl Dean to John Cena and Shay Shariatzadeh, the pair held each other’s hands for support. Here’s a closer look at the Hollywood celebrities who spoke about not having children ever.

Dolly Parton and Carl Dean
Dolly Parton and Carl Dean were married from 1966 to 2025 until his demise, but never had a child. In her memoir ‘Dolly: My Life and Other Unfinished Business,’ she spoke about how she loves children but never wanted her own. “Carl and I had never really wanted to have kids,” she wrote, before adding how she lied to avoid the guilt from judgments, “People had often asked me about having children, and I always felt guilty and selfish if I said I didn’t want them. So sometimes I would just say I couldn’t have them, and that lie made me feel even more guilty.”
During a 2020 interview with Oprah Winfrey, she dedicated a significant portion of her success to her decision not to have a child. “Since I had no kids and my husband was pretty independent, I had freedom. So I think a big part of my whole success is the fact that I was free to work,” she expressed.

Dave Franco and Alison Brie
Dave Franco and Alison Brie, the ‘Together’ stars, tied the knot in 2017 after meeting during Mardi Gras in 2011. While they made an indelible mark together in Hollywood, they have dedicated themselves to being ‘cat parents.’ “It’s great because I don’t have to worry about when should I get pregnant, between seasons, while we’re shooting the show — I don’t think about it every day,” she said in 2018 while filming ‘GLOW,’ and continued, “It would be nice, but I think of all the things that would be so stressful.”

John Cena and Shay Shariatzadeh
Former pro wrestler and actor John Cena exchanged vows with engineer Shay Shariatzadeh in an intimate ceremony in 2020. He candidly opened up about his perspective on not having children. “It’s hard work to balance the time I need to run myself correctly. It’s hard work to be the best partner and husband I can be to my loving wife,” he said during a 2022 interview with Drew Barrymore, and added, “This is just my perspective; I think just because you might be good at something, for me, is not a strong-enough reason to do that. You have to have a passion for it ...it’s like saying to somebody, ‘Man, you know, you are pretty good with your hands. You’d be a great carpenter.’”

Christopher Walken and Georgianne Walken
Christopher Walken and Georgianne Walker walked down the aisle in 1969 after meeting as dancers of ‘West Side Story’ in 1963. The actor expressed how he has worked to his full potential and passion because he chose not to have kids. I do like to work as much as I can because I don’t have children, I don’t have hobbies, I don’t do anything else,” he said to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association in 2005. “And I’m glad that I don’t have children. I have two brothers, and they have plenty of children; they come to my house, and I am always very glad when they leave. I have a wife; I’ve been married for thirty-five years, and I have some cats, but I can open the door, and they go out, so it’s quite nice.”

Oprah Winfrey and Stedman Graham
Oprah Winfrey and Stedman Graham have been in a relationship since 1986, but never got married or had children. While hosting ‘The Oprah Winfrey Show,’ the journalist and media personality realised how messed up people can get because their parents did not realise how serious parenting is. “I also believe that part of the reason why I don’t have regrets is because I got to fulfil it in the way that was best for me: the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in South Africa,” Winfrey said to PEOPLE in 2019, and added, “Those girls fill that maternal fold that I perhaps would have had. In fact, they overfill, I’m overflowed with maternal.”
