A teenage boy who died in a crash following a police pursuit has been named as a 17-year-old from Bristol.

Oscar Hathway, from the Knowle area, was the passenger of a white Nissan Juke which was involved in a collision with a black Audi S3 in south Bristol just after 4am on Sunday morning.

The crash on the A37 Wells Road followed a “short police pursuit” involving an unmarked police vehicle and the white Nissan, Avon and Somerset Police said.

Mr Hathway died at the scene of the collision.

A 17-year-old boy, who was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving following the incident, has since been released on conditional bail.

A mandatory referral has been made to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) as a death following police contact, and Avon and Somerset’s Professional Standards Unit has been informed

A spokesperson for Avon and Somerset Police added: “Oscar’s family have been informed of the latest development and continue to be supported by police.

“Our thoughts are with his family at this difficult time.

“Three other people: two passengers from the Nissan and the Audi driver; were taken to hospital with injuries sustained in the collision.

“They have all since been discharged from hospital.”

The force said inquiries into the crash were ongoing.

A mandatory referral was made to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) as a death following police contact, and Avon and Somerset’s Professional Standards Unit was informed.

An IOPC spokesperson said on Sunday: “We have received a mandatory referral from Avon and Somerset Police following a fatal road collision that occurred in Bristol in the early hours of Sunday October 25.

“The collision, involving two vehicles driven by members of the public, occurred on the A37 Wells Road at the junction with Airport Road and Wootton Park.

“A teenage boy, a front-seat passenger in one of the cars, died at the scene and our condolences go out to the boy’s family and friends.

“We are currently assessing the circumstances and will decide in due course whether an IOPC investigation is required.”

The road was closed for collision investigation and vehicle recovery and reopened just after 4pm on Sunday.

A detective inspector from the force major crime investigation unit is currently leading the inquiry into the collision, pending any decision by the IOPC.
